Vintage Rogers with Bread and Butter lugs

Loading...

Hi All,

I'm new to the whole Rogers thing. I have a friend selling a 12, 16, 20 Vintage Rogers Kit with Bread and Butter lugs (blue sparkle). He is asking $1000. Is this a good/average price?

Also, what's the difference between a kit like this, and a later Holiday model from the mid 60's? Pros and cons? Sonic differences?

Thanks Rogers Experts!

main difference,is the beaver tail lugs, the B+B lugs are prone to cracking,so if you are going to gig/travel,or tune a lot,and or tune high, the beaver tail kits are better, the lugs are very sturdy.the sizes you are looking at in a Cleveland era beaver tail would go for 1,200 1,400 ballpark IMO.The b+B kits go for less, and because the kit you are talking has the most common sizes so unless it is in a rare/desirable wrap and or in pristine condition a 1000.00 sounds a little high to me especially in this economy.I am thinking 800.00 or thereabouts is closer to what they are worth in todays market. My 2 cents

I agree, that sounds high. $600 - $800 would be better, depending on how many lugs are cracked and overall condition. Edges will be wide and flat, along with (I believe) 3 ply Jasper shells, which together make for a more rumble-y sound, almost like 40's Radio Kings, as compared to the more modern sound from the sharp edges and Keller shells of Beavertail era Rogers.

That's exactly the type of information I needed to hear. Thanks my friend!

I thought it was a bit overpriced myself. i also need a set I can gig, where a bread and butter Rogers seems like it might belong in the studio....Burger Kin

Now, if you really want that sound, you could always replace the lugs with JP2Creations repros, they are high dollar, but keep the overall integrity of the kit. They are milled from a solid piece of metal and look like the real thing. If this kit were to be kept all original, it would be better to keep tension off the plastic heads and tune it only as needed to play, but using calfskin all around is the ideal to keep the lugs from cracking, if they aren't already. Replacing those with originals is getting very expensive these days.

There are a few discussions on this forum about "repairs" to brass B/B lugs so that they can take the higher tuning requirements of plastic heads over calf, but if I were to own an original with the lugs intact, I would go calf all the way around. That's just me, though. Many others would do differently, and each to their own, but for my money, those brass lugs are calfskin era and should be played accordingly.
