Vintage Rogers Rack Tom

Loading...

I've got a Rogers 9x13 Rack Tom that I picked up recently that I'd like to move. I need to provide “the complete story” on this one simply for clarification purposes. When I purchased this drum it was covered in some sort of silver metallic-looking paper OVER a blue sparkle wrap. All the hardware (rims, t-rods, lugs, muffler, etc.) were extremely filthy. As a little “bonus”, the prior owner also decided to paint the interior shell black, including the Rogers label. If you’d like to see pics of the drum as purchased, feel free to drop me a line and I’ll send out some pics. I must warn you that they’re not pretty!

I bought the drum as a “project”, removed all the hardware, cleaned and polished it and then started the challenging task of removing the silver metallic paper. Although I was able to remove most of it, there are still remnants of the white adhesive backing on the shell. Whether or not there’s a product or a method of removing it, I have no idea.

The drum itself is a combination of “the good, the bad and the ugly”.

The good – The shell appears to be “in round”and the heads fit fine. The blue sparkle finish shows little to no fade. The beavertail lugs are in really nice condition. The badge is in really nice shape. The muffler assembly seems to function fine. Mounted on the shell is a Swiv-O-Matic tom mount. The drum comes with one original Rogers head (fair condition).

The bad – I have no idea whether the rims are original to the drum. A magnet does stick to them. I doubt that the hardware used to mount the lugs is original. I’m not sure if the badge is mounted on the correct area of the shell. There are a couple extra holes in the shell UNDER the tom mount that can only be seen from the interior of the shell. There are also three “pin dots” on the exterior of the shell that wouldn’t even be noticed unless pointed out where the prior owner might have considered mounting the badge (just a guess on my part). The collet nose on the tom mount shows some cracking.

The ugly – The black interior shell, the white adhesive backing remaining on several areas on the exterior of the shell and the bottom side head.

I mentioned that even the Rogers label on the interior of the shell was painted black. From what I can see (and I’ve only got one functioning eye!) it appears that the SN on the label is 044897. The model appears to read Powertone (does this make any sense?) and I believe the lower right portion of the tag reads Fullerton, California.

Originally, I was going to sell the hardware as separate items. However, perhaps there’s someone out there who could complete the “restoration project” and have a very nice looking, functional vintage tom.

I'm open to offers and have a significant number of pics that I can send out directly to interested parties.

I apologize for the length of this post!
