Vintage premier mahogany or birch?

Loading...

What is your personal preference and why? I've owned both and currently have a mahogany kit, both 12, 14, 20, kept the mahogany over the birch kit because it has an international 12 and the birch kit had a metric 12. I find the mahogany to be a bit fatter and the birch surprisingly bright for such a thin shelled kit. What's your experience?

I like the Mahogany shells better. Warm like home.

Yes, I have both but the mahogany has a nicer bottom end on the toms and resonates really well. In fact my Mahogany Prems are my favourite toms of all my kits.

Mahogany! Fatter, warmer and coincidentally, from my favorite era for Premier. The birch are great as well, but a bit bonky by comparison.

The are very few top quality pure african mahohany shells available. Most are just the inner ply, or inner and outer plies only, usually with a big rotten slab of poplar in the middle. The Prems are 3 plies of the same top grade real mahogany (not lauan).

Don't find them discernably different. I've had several over the years and currently have one with a mix of both birch and mahogany shells.
