Vintage(?) Premier Dating Help!!!!

Loading...

I found this kit and was told it was from the 70's. I've never messed with Premier stuff and was looking for some help. I couldn't pinpoint the year with the catalogs online. Apparently it was born together but the floor tom has longer lugs than the kick or rack. It's 22, 13, 16.

What would a decent price be on this kit? Possible years? Any other cool information would be delightful as well.

Thanks in advance!

Not an expert on Premiers (there are people in here that know much more), those badges do look like 1970s - if they are untampered. The floor tom has the typical Premier lugs of that era, while the other two have the lugs mostly associated with Beverley drums from the late 1960s-early 1970s. Since Beverley was also made in the Premier factory in the UK, I think there was a degree of overlapping. The interior is a giveaway: early 1970s Premiers were 3-ply African mahogany, late 1970s were birch.

That's all I can say, I'm sure others will chime in soon.

It,s normal for Premiers of this period to not have the same lugs on the FT as the rest of the kit. With art deco lugs like these it looks like a Premier Gig Maker PD303 Outfit from around 1975. That's the only outfit I see in the catalogues that has the single lugs w/ oval double tom holder. Always harder for me to price Premiers than other drums. I always love playing them, but almost always have trouble selling them for what they are worth unfortunately. As players kits go they are worth their weight in gold though!

The Powerhouse series (US) from the mid-1970's had lugs like the ones on your rack tom and kick. Not sure about the floor tom.

I have a 16" FT with lugs like your rack/kick, and an 18" FT with lugs like your floor tom. The 16" is definitely from a 1975 powerhouse kit. The 18 is an orphan, but seems to be about the same age. It is floating around town somewhere living the dream with a local jazz player. I need to get it back!

Don't know how helpful that is. It seems like both lug styles were used in the 1970s.

I have two of these, one birch shell/one mahogany. The mahogany is from 72, the birch is from 77/78.

Yeah, they are hard to sell. I got them cheap, but can't even even get $300 for a clean kit.

Thanks for the help, guys. The owner told me $150 for the set. I think I'll pick it up as a gigging kit. I've always thought it'd be cool to have a Premier kit.
