So this kit popped up in my area at $150 and thats almost too good for me to resistExcited But I wanted some counsel first. These are it

He said hes had them for 14 years and bought them from a friend. He says he believes their birch. Im not really gonna be a huge stickler on these because if i buy them theyll be backups for the studio. But I dont wanna be duped out of $150 for something thats utter crap.

Well, Pearl Exports aren't total junk... but not far off.

Honestly, I'm no Pearl expert by any means, and these look like they may have been painted, but for the price. First, I'd offer $100.00 and go up slightly from there. Does the kit include a snare? Maybe a bit more if it does. It looks complete.

So, here's the thing. You can throw these in the back of a pickup in a heavy rain, drive from San Jose to Boston, and not have lost much.

On the other hand, I've seen tons of these in bar bands. Depending on how much you've had to drink, they sound great.

Nope, no snare. Trust me I doubt these would be used for anything except for rehearsal and loaners to people i didnt trust. No one gets my C&C kit;) I just found it sketch that they didnt have any serial numbers on them and that there were no plates anywhere. Very "odd".

Those are on CL just a couple of hours east of me. I had seen them.

I don't consider myself a Pearl Export expert, but I can tell you a couple of things. Pearl started using these types of lugs in the mid-80s, which Ludwig later went with similar ones on their Rockers line (but Ludwig did have the Mach 4 and Mach 5 kits in the 70s).

These look legit except for the finish, which almost looks like denim jeans to me. And to my knowledge, Pearl never did that (Slingerland did in the late 70s!). So whatever it is, it's probably somebody's creative covering idea.

That being said, IMO they are still easily worth the $150. But, like Fish said, offer $100 and see what happens.

Im gonna offer him $100, kinda funny that you saw this on CL too. I asked him about the finish and he said he painted them it was gold before. Well see what happens.

Depends if you want deep toms. Looks like Craft store Krylon Blue Metalflake paint to me. Never can tell until you see them. $150 in parts for sure. Hate to see that, though.

Let us know what happens.

Nothing special here but I like them.

In general, I love drums :)

At the same time - being honest here - I never did like those at all. Those long lugs and deep toms just did nothing for me and I in fact can here the sound they make - and reminds me of how disappointed I was with my ddrum Dominion 20 inch deep BD (sold it). Just too little response and a tone I just do not care for.

At the same time, only about 74 seconds later ;) I think I will find something positive to say (or I should have just shut my trap ;) .........

Those Exports have the reputation of being a big seller for a reason. I understand they are quite durable and were wildly popular partly because they were affordable (if I recall correctly)...and I can totally dig that - as it allowed more drummers to have kits than if they were not available affordably.

Decent score for your purpose.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

Last year I gave my son 10/12" toms from that series... having used them for some top end with my Slingerlands IMO they were good bang for the buck... He is pulling a great sound from them in his recording studio..

As I understand it, the early Pearl Exports were made of luan, and frankly far better than the more recent basswood ones that they made towards the end. I doubt exports were ever made of birch, but if they are, then I see no reason to make them mere backup drums. Birch is a great wood to make drums from, right up there with Maple. In any case if they are Birch they are certainly well worth the full asking price and then quite a bit more. If they are Luan it's a fair price, as I understand it the early exports made of Luan were pretty decent quality, far better than their true vintage (60's-70's) drums.
