Vintage Pearl Drum Kit - 60's - Help

Loading...

I recently acquired a blue sparkle Pearl drum kit that I believe to be from around 1968.

Sizes & Specs

14"x20" bass drum - 16 lugs

8"x12" tom - 6 lugs

9"x13" tom - 6 lugs

14"x16" floor tom - 8 lugs

5"x14" steel snare drum - 8 lugs

Cymbals

14" hi hat pair with "Japan" stamped on inside bell

20" Ride with "Japan" stamped inside bell

16" crash (pretty sure not original) with "Medium" stamped on the bottom bow

2x flat base straight stands, both identical

1x flat base hi hat stand with "Speed Pedal" foot board

1x bass drum pedal with leather strap and "Speed Pedal" foot board

1x throne (maybe from the 70s?)

1x double tom mount

There are no Pearl badges (I assume they've been lost or fallen off over time) only the Pearl logo on tom holders and the floor tom legs. The heads, including the bass drum head are not original. I had a vintage Pearl logo decal made so I'll be adding a new front head soon.

They closely resemble these, just different sizes.

Any more info on these would be great.

Obviously it has a different wrap but the hardware looks identical to mine which I'm also trying to ID. You probably already saw it if you were looking through the posts, but if it will help you can see it here.

That's a nice blue sparkle, I bet it looks amazing under stage lights.

These are more than likely a stencil brand. We see far more Pearl made stencil kits that have no names than Pearl kits that have no badges on them. See, many stencil kits from this era had no badges at all, some had foil sticker type badges. Many times the foil ones either came off in the heat of an attic or were peeled off because they became loose around the edges and looked bad. Those with no badges typically had the thicker shells. Can you tell us, are the shells thin with re-rings in them or about 1/4" thick with no rings? If they have rings, they are more than likely pre-67.

Anyway, they look clean.

Would you take better angled shot of the edge? More like a straight on pic? That way I can tell if it is 3 or 5 ply.

I'll have to when I get to go back home. I had to leave for college and couldn't take them with me. I'll be sure to snap some better shots when I can.

Thanks so much for your help!

Hey there,

The new Adobe Acrobat Reader doesn't seem to be letting me snap screen shots off of the PDF Pearl 1968 catalog like I used to- I'd love to post the exact picture of this kit- will keep trying. Mister T

Anyway, this is in the 1968 catalog as "Outfit #067" Pearl Thunderking

It's got the right lugs and the exactly correct 68 Thunderking tom holder. The snare strainer fits the 68 as well. 67 strainers (atleast in the catalog I have had a rounded/cylindrical throw rod)

Your kit looks in good shape, wrap is in nice shape, I like the re-rings and the edges look good. The pedal and hihat stands are valuable only for their historical value- they are not playable live. The older cymbals are recycling unfortunately unless you play avante garde jazz. If you want a value- on this I would say realistically, in this economy about 150$-200$
