Vintage Ludwig Last viewed: 8 hours ago

Hi to everybody. I'm going to buy this ludwig set but unfortunately I got only this 2 pics. Is there anyone who knows what model is, and how old should it be? Thanks in advance. I've noticed there are 2 cymbal brackets on the bass drums and 2 tom mounts. I thought the bass drum has been modified, Is that true?

Thanks again for Your kind reply.

60's (keystone badges) Looks like black cortex wrap. Even better if it's black lacquer! I learned on an identical drum kit in 1963. Best sounding drums Ludwig made at the time. We need to see the serial numbers on the badges to properly date them. What sizes are the drums?

Great score! Great drums.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Thanks Mr.Purdie for Your reply.

Actually I should see the drums next week. I don't know nothing about the set cause the owner passed away and his wife can't say much about the kit.

I don't know but looking at the pics the sizes of the toms seem to be 12 12 or 13 13. The floor tom should be 16. I don't know the BD size.

What do You think about the 2 tom mounts and the 2 cymbal mounts?

Have they been added later?

Thanks again for Your useful help.

They are gonna be great drums, that's for sure. But I don't know about that badge right under the muffler knob. Doesn't seem original to me - the grommet looks weird, IMHO. Maybe I'm worng. Anybody more schooled about Ludwig knows anything?

BTW, those high hats are Paiste 2oo2!! The best hi-hats I ever played. If the price is reasonable, this might be the last kit you'll ever need to buy in your life.

Tone control by the badge was usually a mid 70's thing, with a B+O badge, not a keystone. Those drums often had granitone interiors. I see there's a rail on the top player side of the bass drum too.

Edit note:

After checking my trans badge stuff (late 50's), badge and tone control were on the same panel too.

Interesting kit.

Those cymbals look like they could all be 2002`s. I could be wrong, but those look like 2002 bells on those cymbals. I really dig old 2002`s! great cymbals. Hope you get them out of that basement asap! Good luck getting the kit and let us know how it goes. Tommy

Lots of red flags.Keystone under the tone control as has been said is of for trans badge, not so much for 60's keystones.

Two tom mounts, one a double which isn't factory,or there wouldn't be a cymbal mounting bracket on the drum.

The second consolette rail mount should be on the side of the bass, not on top like some club dates were,so that was moved or added. It's also mounted real close to the back(possibly front) of the drum, which seem to be missing it's badge.

Those grommets on the mounted tom badges don't look original, and seem to be sticking out further that factory ones do.Those interiors should all be white resocoat, but, some lery late 60's keystones did have clear interiors.

The original hollywood twin tom kits came with two 12" toms, later on with a 12 and 13.But that kits seems to have 2-13" toms because of the large classic lugs.A 12" tom from that vintage would have small classic lugs.

I think the bass is a 22" but can't be sure.If there are 10 lugs on one side,then a 22,if 8 a 20" drum.

I'm thinking black cortex wrap.

I would have to inspect those drums up close, with a tuning key in my hand.Just too many questions, and things just not lining up.

I agree with tamadrm. There are several red flags. The grommets definitely look off and the bass drum mount situation is also suspect. For some reason, they look like they were rewrapped to me. Maybe it's the way the light is reflecting off of the wrap on rack tom in the right side of the first photo. I guess the only way to tell for sure is to check them out in person.
