Vintage Ludwig Snare Cases?

I?m not sure if this has already been covered on this forum but I have a question regarding old Ludwig snare drum cases. I?d love to get some old Ludwig cases to go with my old Ludwig snares. The 3 most common types I have seen on e-bay are;

1) 50?s & 60?s large square type with a divider for stand & sticks. This case has the small yellow script logo on the front bottom left.

2) 60?s & 70?s hard plastic type with the flat bottom and rounded top also with a divider for stand & sticks, has a round logo in the centre circle of the case. This case sometimes came with cool, red felt lining, although I don?t know if that?s original.

3) 70?s or 80?s hard plastic case sometimes called the UFO case, has a large 70?s Ludwig logo across the sides.

Now for the question, which do you prefer and why? Which do you think provides the best protection for the drum? Would you trust your favorite vintage snare in one of these on a flight? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

I just sold 3 of them on eBay. There's several UFO cases on eBay right now. I just sold a UFO case that had a sixties script logo. These were on a round sticker in the middle of the case. Usually on just one side. Seems they were tight with the stickers! There is a fourth type of snare case dating from the seventies, a molded and riveted case, with a seventies logo with a sticker. In the late seventies Ludwig offered injected plastic cases. ...Matt

Hi onemat,

Here's a photo of the hard case for my 1963 Ludwig oyster black pearl snare. It has the divider for the stand and sticks inside. This case wouldn't provide very good protection for shipping or air travel because the snare just sits in the case without any padding. The fit isn't tight, so the snare can rock 'n roll back and forth. It's not much different than setting it in a loose cardboard box. It would work fine though if you shimmed it all around with foam padding, although the case itself might take a beating.

Hi Bob,

When I bought my latest Jazzfest (I had had a '65 Silver Sparkle too), it came in a case just like that one. I don't use it either. I recently started using XL Protector snare cases, and that's why I sold most of my Ludwig cases. Enjoy your Jazzfest, it's a beauty.

I've kept and repaired a few "oldies" just to have.

However, if you truly will be travelling buy the best

you can afford.

As a rule, bags for local gigs by car. HC for truck, Anvil

or any number of ATA for air.

Protechtor and HB Enduro with foam have worked well.

My Dad has stories from touring in the 60's and 70's

that make it hard to believe anything made it

in one piece.

Including his '59 Les Paul, '57 Strat and '52 Tele...

Cheers!

I have...........

With the exception of a couple different styles I think I have at least one of each type of Snare Case that Ludwig offered over the last 45-50 years with my favorite being the one shown below. I have seen similar Cases but none with the Logo located in the handle area...........
