So re-reading the original post the numbers I see 888XXX would indicate early 1971. Would the other tom number be an 8 instead of a 6? that would make more sense to me and would also indicate an early 1971 time frame....

Ludwig was indeed using curved spurs in 1970. Those spurs came out around the middle of 1969 as there are a small handful of keystone badge sets with curved spurs.
