Vintage Ludwig Club Date Kit Wrapped In Gold Strata

In all my years of collecting and restoring this is a new one. Anyone ever seen something like this before? Think it is a re-wrap or custom order? Can't imagine someone going through the process of un- wrapping one kit to re-wrap on another.

Pretty cool. The snare and bass drum look to be covered in wrap from one batch of wrap. The two toms look to be covered in wrap from another batch of wrap. I don't know enough about Ludwig history to even guess about a possible re-wrap. I thought that the differences in the general appearance of random-patterened drums within a drum set wouldn't bother me. But, after a while, the differences in random patterns of Pink Strata wrap on my Rogers drums did bother me. I have no regrets about trading away this set after owning it for a few years. That 10x14 on a cradle worked very well as a second floor tom.

Those do indeed look like Strata wraps for Ludwig Standard drums to me. So, re-wraps or re-lugged, both of which seem very odd indeed. Or, as stated, a special order, which I would have sent back since the wraps are so badly matched between drums.

Hard to know for certain but that combination seems to push beyond the realm of special order, and the Standards and Club Dates were similarly priced so what would be the point?

My guess is that this is something that a Ludwig employee may have built for their kid's Christmas present using lower cost or leftover parts. That could explain the odd cross-pollination of drum lines and the use of two different strata wraps.

I saw this kit and was wondering what was going on. Love the wrap and have most of the colors in my snare collection but it just doesn’t seem to fit unless of course you want a Frankenstein kit. IMHO

Can't be sure, but the grommets appear to be aluminum(?)...the tom's grommet hole seems slightly enlarged.

One of the bass hoops has a piece of sparkle inlay and the other one has a strata inlay.

Wild guess #1 is that it was a painted Duco (silver and something)....paint flaked off...the guy got a few scrap pieces of strata wrap from who knows where and went at it. Obviously two different batches of strata wraps there....not even sure the bass drum might be badly-faded ruby strata...hard to say...
