Vintage late 60s early 70s Yamaha Color Chart?

Loading...

I was wondering if there was a webpage that had the color chart for available finishes on Yamaha drums from the late 60s or early 70s. The Vintage Drum Guide includes limited catalog scans of this period but I'm only finding a color chart from later--around '78--at which time all those interesting wraps were no longer being made. Thanks!

I found those same scans in various places on DFO website. I think my drums may be black oyster wrap but I thought it might be black willow. They sorta look like a combination of 60s Ludwig black oyster and 70s bowling ball ludwig black oyster.

I got the scans by searching google images... someone recently posted a bunch at the dfo site. (Pounder) Is your bass drum 8 lug, wood hoop? 6 lug metal?

The C series do have much nicer shells than the typical mij with no re-rings, so they have a pretty nice sustain. I place the rack tom in and old flat base Ludwig snare stand (so it floats, no clamp) cause the original tom mount chokes the sound. Coated single ply heads, Gibraltar floor tom feet (the ones with the big air pocket) add more sustain to the floor. The bass drum on this model only has 6 lugs and metal hoops. Some people change out to a wood hoop to improve the sound. I just threw on a super kick 1 single ply/single ply front head with no port/ no padding and it sounds OK (havent tried it yet with wood hoops) I use the kit all the time on jazz gigs, they sound good in the medium/ high tuning range, and they are light to carry. I would really like to compare them to one of the higher priced model "willow" kits that had 8 lug BD's, wood hoops etc.

The wrap is verrry cool on these kits and always sparks a comment or two at every gig... good mojo

Yes it is an 8 lug per side, wood hoop (although only one original, with the original inlay on it, the other was wood colored nonoriginal. I took some pictures, here's a picture of the floor tom (apart) and it is representational of the color:

Thank you very much for these old catalog scans- those are very important to have around for reference when buying used gear. Here is my only vintage Yamaha purchase so far - I recently sold it to EGW who loves it.

I did too- great sharp crackin' snare

From the vintage drum guide, this snare:

http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/yamaha_snare_page.html#

is the same color as my set, and it says that snare is Black Oyster. Are the Willow and Oyster finishes the same thing, different name? Looking for clarification. I found the same drumforum post, but I'm hoping to find some more extensive catalog scans. Where could I find them? Surely there are some out there somewhere.
