Vintage Kent Snare

Loading...

I just recently purchased a 14x5 kent snare with a Blue Flower Badge with gold trim. I got it for about $67.00. What concerns me is that it is either stained with an extremely dark mahogany or it is made of extremely dark mahogany. There is no serial number and has single flanged hoops. I'm not sure if i have just been ripped off, as my drum teacher hasn't seen a shell like it either, or if i got a great steel.

It's a six lugger, so maybe a student model?? 67.00 bucks is what you paid for it, so it must be worth that much to you. If it sounds good, keep it. If you're collecting, my guess is not too much resale value. With the vintage drum market the way it is, always do some homework first or check comparable items in Ebay....

This one looks like yours, but not as in good of shape as yours:

Another close to yours with case:

Its better to have people think you're an idiot, than to open your mouth and prove them wrong, unless you doubt yourself then speak away....

There's NO way that you got ripped off for $67.00 for that drum. That being said, I don't think the wood is mahogany. The grain pattern doesn't look like mahogany from what I can tell from those pictures. But, whatever the type of wood, it's a cool drum and it's a collectible drum and I would say enjoy it!

You didn't get a steal or pay too much. Probably just a bit over market value.

Its 2 ply maple with a mahogany stain.

Just to add another 2 cents here... I have the exact same snare drum, minus the stained interior. I'm guessing that either (A) A previous owner decided to stain it to match the exterior or (B) Someone at Kent was trying an experiment one afternoon :)

Either way, you have a nice condition, maple shell drum (judging from the close ups of the grain) and you could have done much worse for $67.00.

I've used mine live and in the recording studio and I got great results. My advice, tune it up to a med. high tension, slap a moon gel or two on the top head and start playing it. You may also want to swap out the snares for a wider set, assuming you have the original Kent snares (think they are 10 strand or so).

Enjoy the new/old drum!!
