Vintage(?) Early 90's Tama Rockstar DX

Loading...

From thisbright14

A Tama Rockstar DX kit (same year range as yours) was my first real kit when I was 14. Mine was in a more "purple-ish" blue color 22/12/13/16. They sounded great and I played them up through early college when I got into vintage drums. Stupidly I sold them to get some money to fix up a crappy Slingerland kit. Little did I know at the time that the Slingerland kit was WAY beyond help (at least for my skill level at the time). I sold the TAMA for a measly $225. I do have a video of me at 14 playing it at my first show ever....so thats pretty cool. Im sure we all feel the same about our first kits...but man I wish I had it back! Violin-Adam

well Adam if it makes you feel better. my first kit was a Camco sparkle red with mount on the wood hoop. It went to a family member and then 5 years later in sat on my Gto in his garage. Then when I went to go fetch it back he said that he either threw it out or left it at his church?? DUH are we Stupid

Oh! Ouch indeed!

When I was a kid my folks bought me a Crown gold sparkle kit. Man, it was kinda horrid, but for a kid in the mid sixties it was pure nirvana.

I sold it to buy the Ludwig Standard kit you can see on my webpage (which I had also sold, tracked down, and re-purchased). And yes, I wish I had the Crown kit back as well. If only for nostalgic reasons. Funny thing, I did find the snare. It popped up in a c/l ad about a year and a half ago for $20.00. The guy with the snare had no idea about the rest of the kit.

How do I know it was my old Crown snare you ask? Well, the throwoff was lousy. So way back in those dark days I put a Ludwig strainer on it. Also, I had dropped it at one time and it has a small ding on the batter side rim. This snare came with the Ludwig throwoff and the matching ding. Unless the drum Gods are really yanking my chain, it's the same drum.

After getting it back I reversed the 'upgrade' and put an original Crown strainer and butt plate back on the drum. No, I hadn't saved the originals, but Mikey777 had a set. Now, the snare is back to sounding ringy and awful, and the snare wires won't stay taut, but it's all original, including the ding! lol

Hello all .... resurrecting an old thread, but it's the one that I found this forum with when I was searching Rockstar DX pictures. I have a "misty chrome" '91 Rockstar DX kit (10, 12, 13, 16, 22[x2]) that I got in late '92 and have had it since. I have other kits, like an '80s Ludwig Super Classic, but the Rockstar DX's are the old reliables. Couple times at gigs I got comments or questions about my Starclassics ..... except I don't own Starclassics. Put clear Evans G2's on them and the floor tom will rattle the walls. Aquarian SuperKick I's turn the 22's into weapons of massive whumpness. Oh, and they look pretty good too. And fairly light, unlike the Ludwigs. Couldn't be happier with the last 20 years of playing them.

Bedrock! Welcome to the forum! Since you've resurrected this old thread I don't think anybody saw you sneak in. Post some pictures of your kit in a new thread, we would love to see them.

Say, do you know Fred and Barney? (sorry, couldn't resist...)

I just cleaned up my boss's early 90s Rockstars. I think they are very nice quality. They had the original pins on them, which were beat to heck, so I changed them to clear Emps and he loves them! Could be he just loves heads without dents. I gutted the snare and rebuilt it from the ground up and it sounds very nice. I would have no hesitation to gig with that kit.
