Great thread for info! Though I agree a Luddy is probably the best way to go, if you are on a vintage budget, I can highly recommend an 80's birch set of Tama superstars - I bought a set really cheap on ebay a few years ago and the bass drum is awesome, best I've had. Look out though, there are some crummy composite Tamas about from the 80's, but with birch superstars you can't go wrong!
