Vintage Drum Identification (Possibly Rare!)

Loading...

About two years ago I have received some vintage drums from my uncle. Today I am here to find out more about them. I have uploaded a video to YouTube describing the drums. Let me know if I need to give any more details and if anyone knows something feel free to leave such info on this thread or comment on the video (or both).

Bob - The 'good piece' in the lot is the floor tom (looks like an old Radio King or Gretsch, hard to tell from the video,) but it's in bad shape. The Wilson's are what we refer to as 'Asian Fire-wood!' It's an Asian made import that uses a wood called Luan. Asian mahogany. It's not worth much. You'd be lucky to get $50 at a garage sale for them. The Radio King floor tom is something else. (If it is a Radio King.) Check ebay for recent sales of vintage Radio King or Gretsch floor toms. Bearing in mind that what you have there is a project drum at best. Over-all, not a lot of cash there. It was your uncles 'beater' kit. I'll bet he had a ton of fun with it too!

Welcome to VDF!

Yep the floor tom does look Radio King (Slingerland brand) 12x14 with Streamline lugs. Color hard to see but possibly sparkling silver?

Everyone always looking for the priceless drum inheritance eh? What is being stored in the bass drum? Anyway drums aren't bad and if the set was complete it may go $75-100 tops. Cute sizes but not worth much unfortunately.

The stuff in the bass drum is there to dampen/absorb the extra "BOOM!" sound.

Bob - Can you please post up a few shots of that floor tom? One shot of each side of the drum so that the drum fills the frame. And if possible, a shot of the inside of the drum.

If that drum is what I think it is, it 'could be' worth a couple hundred bucks all by itself. You just need to catch a guy looking for a project drum to complete a kit. If it's an old Radio King or Gretsch tom, somebody will want it.

You've gotten some honest assessments of the kit, but don't let it bring you down. There is some 'value' in the kit if the floor tom is one of the drums I mentioned.

In your video you mention the floor tom is 14x12 and has a mount. Are there also floor tom mounts and legs that hold the drum off of the ground?

I see a similarly sized and style drum in the 1941 Slingerland catalog.

http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/slingerland_drumsets_1941.html

It was mounted on the bass drum and not used as a floor tom.

Like you mentioned in your video, a new video of the "floor tom" would be very helpful.
