Vintage cymbals rusted up overnight

Loading...

I just got this message from a friend on my facebook wall. Does anyone have any experience/can you help with this?

***hey Phillip, just had some crazy stuff happen to my cymbals and need some advice if you got it. had my drums set up in the same room as our inverter, and the batteries started burning off the water yesterday for one reason or another. anyway this caused the room to get incredibly humid. my two vintage A's rusted up ove...r night, straight black. and my newer diril turned purple. I hate to ruin the patina I had going on both those cymbals, but I dont want them falling apart. you got any home remides to clean that up without fully cleaning off the patina? I really like the way my ride sounds with 50yrs of dirt on it, hate to ruin that.

hope all is well, mike.***

...get Wright's Copper Cream and have a go at 'em. You may likely lose a bit of the older patina, but the nice thing about Wrights as compared to, say, Groove Juice or Sabian Performer's Cleaner...is that it takes off stuff in stages, with repeated applications. So when the new crap comes off, just stop applying the cream and the problem should be solved.

I doubt that what happened was actually rust...if they are old A's they are B20 alloy and that doesn't 'rust' per se.

I think the Wrights will bring 'em back very well. Keep us posted.

Do you know what type batteries were connected to the inverter? If it's like a large 12V auto/boat lead acid battery...when a cell starts to go bad if will over heat and vent some pretty strong acid vapor. It will heat a room up and I'm pretty sure the vapor had something to do with what happened. If it's using water the battery has bad cells or the charger is OVER charging the batteries causing them to over heat.

What is the inverter used for??

Sounds to me more like acid, not straight up moisture (or the two combined). Either way, not a good environment for cymbals or humans. Moisture alone won't do much to a cymbal, but mix in the acidic vapors which batteries give off and you have a deadly combo which will eat away at many metals, bronze especially.
