Vintage 1920's Ludwig Black Beauty Snare Drum

Loading...

Hello!

I'm a New Member and need some help with a snare drum that we own. We have a drum that was purchased for my Husband back in 1954 by his parents. He believes the drum was purchased in Bakersfield, CA. and we don't have any idea how much was paid for it back then? It was probably a second hand store or perhaps a Music Store? He used it for awhile in an Elementary School Band and then decided he rather play a Baritone in the school band. But he kept the Drum and then loaned it to a Cousin who had it for awhile. The Cousin did return the drum and had changed the bottom skin to a Remo Weather King Ambassador Batter. We don't know why he changed it, perhaps it had been damaged? We believe that the Batterhead is Original. Anyway the Drum has been stored at his Mother's home well over 45 years now in her cupboard. We are clearing out the home now and want to do something with this Vintage Drum? I was thinking about selling it on eBay and want to make sure that I describe it correctly and that I start it at a fair price.

This Drum has 8 lugs and looks like it is a 5x14 and someone said "I measured it wrong and that it was a 4x14"? Really not sure about how to measure it? The Shell is Black & has Brass Scrolls or Waves around the outside. It says "LUDWIG CHICAGO" near the Strainer. The Strainer has "Pat. Pend." on the handle. I looked this drum up on the internet and they called it a "Black Beauty" and dated it 1920-1925. I'm not sure about the Hoops? The top hoop looks like it might be Original. But the bottom hoop is a metal color that is different from the top hoop? That's really all I know about this Drum.

I was wondering from my pictures attached below, if you could tell us what year it might be for sure Also approx. value to a collector? I would appreciate any advice or comments. Thank You So Much! Wendy

My oh my, Wendy.

This is the story that everyone wants to tell.

What you have is a Ludwig Deluxe with scroll pattern engraving.

Remarkable ( very good ) condition for it's age and history.

It appears to be completely original with the exception

of the Remo snare head. This is a non-issue.

The deeper collar of the calf head makes the drum look like

a 4" in your photo, but it may very well be a 5x14.

The current prices for this drum are anywhere from $800.00 - $2,000.00.

E-Bay will set off a frenzy.

So will your post...

Hang on tight!

Hello! Welcome! And here is yet ANOTHER story of an incredible drum find this year! Something must be going on with the planetary-alignment.

Yes, that is a VERY nice example of what is commonly referred to as a "Black Beauty" That's the real thing! What a beauty! You'll get thousands of dollars for it when it sells. That's almost a guarantee.

wow. you have us vintage drum fans drooling. it's a 4x14" (you measure the heighth of the drum itself which doesn't include the rims but does include the part of the drum covered by the rims). it looks all original (except the top hoop looks suspiciously clean in the first picture). if you look closely at the outside of the top hoop, are there any words engraved on it? the bottom head won't affect value.

it's a scroll pattern engraving. DeLuxe Ludwig model drum. be sure to call it a Black Beauty in ebay as you did here because that's what everybody is looking for. (technically a slang term)

congrats on the drum. you should certainly get more than $1,000 from it.

My guess would be more in the range of $2000-$2500 because it looks pretty clean and intact and I can't remember the last one I saw go for less than $2K on Ebay.

And, yes, technically it's a Ludwig "Deluxe", but everybody knows them as "Black Beauty" -which I think was originally a Slingerland moniker...wasn't it?

Anyway...it's a very collectible and valuable snare drum in any case! Congrats on a wonderful treasure!

From thos pictures...to MY eye, it appears that the top rim is the same color as the lugs and the throwoff, but the bottom hoop looks more copper-colored....could be the lighting...could be the plating has worn off from sitting in a snare stand's basket. I highly doubt it's a replacement...but someone else will know better than I. The Remo snare side head is probably 40 years old!

It does appear as if there may be a minor problem with the throwoff being bent from dragging on the bottom head collar. Shouldn't be a big issue..
