Vintage 15x12 Ludwig Tom not resonating on snare stand! Last viewed: 1 hour ago

Loading...

Hi all.

I recently bought a 15x12 tom to match my Ludwig Hollywood kit. The tom is 67 and the Hollywood is 74. I am doing sort of a Jimmy Chamberlin set up where the toms are out of size sequence.

When I put 15 on a snare stand (stretches to like 15.5) the drum won't resonate. I just had the bearing edges done on both sides and the drums SINGS when I just hold it by the rim and whack it.

I did buy a period correct lug mount but it looks like the tom had the clip mount things so I'll had to drill and fudge the whole to make the tom/floor tom leg mount work.

Anyone experience this?

Do I make sense?

Patrick, how tight do you have the snare basket matters as does the angle of the snare basket also. Do not tighten it down hard ever on any snare drum.

Your drummers not much good is he!? What you need is someone that's as good as me. ! John Henry Bonham !!

Wow Patrick! It´s looks like my own history!

I recently bought a 15x12 Trans Badge WMP (3 ply mahogany/maple/mah. w/ solid maple rings).

I´m on "restoring process" right now (general cleaning; smooth hand sanded bearing, etc), so I didn´t play on it yet, BUT, I was already thinking about the same point, because this was a marching tom and does not have any mount/suspension system on it.

I´m not a "drill fan" in any way, so I´ll follow this post in order to learn some experiences and alternatives for this issue....

I agree with Vtgmore200, regarding snare stand basket diameter & pressure, I guess it should be one with extensible arms or something like that...

I also saw on the web some new "toys" called "BOOTYsomething" especially designed to keep resonance on floor toms and snares.... could be an alternative, what do people think?

So, we keep in touch, I´ll let you know about my progress

ps: here a pic from my WMP 15 tom

ive got a 12x15 ludwig clubdate marching snare that i'm using as a floor tom on a kit right now. i used a newer ludwig snare stand(that i shortened) with it. its the regular type basket in which the one arm slides in and out. it holds the tom just fine and doesnt choke the sound in any way whatsoever.

Like said above, make sure that snare stand is not tightened on the tom. If its loose and you still can't get it to sound how you like, you can look into a Gauger FlexFrame or Booty Shakers.

thanks all.

I had it on a stand that is too tight on that bottom rim so I had no idea it would choke the drum so much. I'll try an old fashioned snare stand.

I think at the end of the day, I'm going to go with getting that Ludwig mount on it (for the floor tom legs, tom mounts) for the L post things.

So my work is to drill and install that mount and then buy either a hercules stand or something.

On the way plus side, Precision drums did the bearing edges and the ebay seller was gracious enough to partially refund for the cost of having the edges done. Before I did this -the drum was a total bummer...nothing more disappointing than an ebay purchase the doesn't resonate and just "plunk"s.

onward and upward. will post pics.

I agree that you absolutely need to keep the snare stand basket loose. Otherwise you will certainly experience a choked drum sound.

If you don't want to drill, put a RIMS mount on it. It will sing just like when you hold it by the rim after you tune it and you won't have to drill your shell.

I recently commented and had a bit of converse on a thread around here......but I can not find it!!!!

It was about how a guy used some printing to print a citrus mod 'wrap' and the results were stellar. Point is, looking closely at the pic, I noticed he had some special home-made suspension mounting going on with his snare stand for the tom. He even posted a good pic of it for me (and all) to see. He used PVC plastic tubing. The piece(s) were like an L shaped (elbow) with one end at the end of the stand arm and the other I think went through the tension rods.

If any of you find it (recall?) please post a link to the thread of it here so I can have it for my use too.

Thanks,

John

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!
