Vintage - 13" Zildjian Hi-Hats (Made in Canada)

Loading...

I've just joined your forum...great stuff.

I'm a basement player mostly, with my drums...I did play in a country band for a while - that was fun. I'm playing in a trad band now, here in Newfoundland. I've played drums, guitar, banjo and mandolin now for 20 years. I bought a 1974 Ludwig blue-oyster-pearl kit from a friend in 2005 - best thing I ever did. I'm now attempting to get a band together with some friends. I just bought a pair of 13" Sabian Fusion hats...I like their crisp punch and volume.

I have an old set of 13" Zildjian Hats here, and I'm curious as to their value. I've done some google work, researching the history of "Zildjian", and read how, for a while, when Avedis bought the Turkish operation, he imported cymbals from Turkey and then finished them in Canada, so they were "Avedis Zildjian" stamped "Made in Canada". This subsidiary later became "Sabian", (under brother Robert)...check this out;

I've never seen any other Canadian Zildjians. These hats are close in weight, but there is a difference in weight and tone.

So, what I'm wondering is, are these hats rare? What do you guys think these would go for at auction?

I would appreciate any advice you can offer.

Thanks,

cbatten75

PS: I can email better photos if you'd like a closer look.

Your hats were stamped Made In Canada in Meductic, New Brunswick, if I got that right, the operation came to be after some RnR after WWII, hunting and fishing.

They're some great cymbals and a unique part of their production.

Not so rare, but rare enough, 13" hats, maybe more so-$200-$300?

Canadian made A's are more rare than the made in USA types, but rarity in and of itself doesn't necessarily mean that they're worth any more than the others. In order for any item to become more valuable, relative rarity in combination with demand is required. These cymbals sound no different that their American made counterparts. The only difference between them is just in one component of the trademark and nothing else. They aren't sought after by players or collectors just for that. The difference in the trademark is merely a curiosity.

These are worth about $100 - $150 and no more.

Well ....whatever.

I think they are beautiful hats. If they sound good keep 'em.

Bill (drumaholic) is absolutely right. He's a well-known and well-respected Zildjian expert.

The Meductic plant in Canada was the Avedis Zildjian Company's auxiliary plant (AZCO) where they planned to produce their rebewed Zilco mid-level line and their budget lines.

When they bought the rights to the Istanbul, Turkey K. Zildjian shop, Kerope and his sons Gabriel and Michael relocated to that plant and worked on producing Avedis Zildjian's newly owned K. Zildjian series. (They would be considered "Canadian Ks" - worth maybe a little more than EAKs).

But, like Bill said, any Avedis Zildjian "Made in Canada" - stamped pies are no different than their "Made in U.S.A." pies, except that there are far fewer of them around.

Dig it !

They come up now and again..they don't necessarily fetch more of a price than other Avedises of their time period...but, if you like 'em, keep 'em...also, given you are in AU, 60...I am gonna go out on a limb and say there probably aren't too many *Canadian A's down under....

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the discussion and learning more on the history. I just found this forum chain from 2008! After giving them to a friend, they have found their way back to me. Thinking of selling as I have 70s era 14" Zildjian hats (USA) and 13" Sabian Fusion hats.

I live in eastern Canadian too & have had a few of these Canadian A's pass through my hands as well as some nice early Sabians. As well as stamping A's with "Made in Canada" there are also 70's Canadian A's with no "Made In" at all. A few years ago that led me to believe I had found a old Turkish A until the experts chimed in here & set me straight. THey are rarer again, but again not any more valuable to collectors.
