Vibra-Fibing shell interiors

Loading...

So I was looking back over Neil Peart's brand usage history and read that for a while he had the interiors of his shells treated with 'Vibra-Fibing' at the Percussion Center in Ft Wayne, IN. I can think of only once when I've ever actually seen something like this...on a set of Tama drums I believe back in the '80s.

Is this something that is still being done? It would be interesting to know if Neil had his trusty old 5x14 Slingerland snare(s) treated, or if it was just the toms. Bass drums too?

What do y'all know about this treatment? Thoughts/experience?

Several years ago, while talking with Bernie Stone at the Chicago Drum Show, I found out he was the one that was actually doing the vibrafibing at the Percussion Center. He said he was actually thinking of doing some more drums.

I am interested in this process also - as I have done some work with fiberglass. I don't think it is like the spun fiberglass Blaemire shells but rather a sprayed on thin layer.... I'd think it's hardness and 'slickness' would contribute to a livelier sound?..... any more info from people familiar with the process appreciated!

Usually anything that thickens a shell ... will reduce the resonance.... AKA Pearl wood/fibreglass shells.... dead as a doornail...

Cheers

Neil apparently never had the snare vibrafibed. Also, it was not a 5x14 shell, but a 5.5x14. Here’s some info about it, including a quote where Neil said he was afraid of modifying it:
