Van der Glas Marching Snare Drum (from Netherlands)

Hi,

This is an old (I believe: rare) marching snare drum from Holland, found in a barn full of lots of nearly everything. It's a VAN DER GLAS in 14" x 9". Stamped 'VDG' inside of both hoops. WMP with a red metallic stripe on it. According the manufacturing company (which still is producing marching snares under the brand name 'Majestic') it is from the 70s/80s.

Extremly light and thin (3.5 mm!) shell. You can't do bearing edges on it. So the constructor's idea was, to add a separate plastic ring onto both edges. These plastic rings have round shape. They are just pressed into the shell - and done! The reso side even has a snare bed.

It appears that the designing engineer made a mistake: the parallel action is working ... but there was no bar inside of the shell to compensate the pressure from the wires. So the shell got dents to the inside on both sides of the turning rod.

I now have placed a second bar parallel to the turning rod additionally, so the shell is all round again.

Batter head: still the original one, reso head: a new Remo Diplomat Snare.

Little mystery with the damper knob: that's a STAR one, I believe for sure. (Comment from the producer on that: it's original, not built in afterwards ...!)

Sound: a little shabby with lots of ringing, but with a deep punch (no surprise).

Ralf

Thank you, grantro.

It's just three weeks with me (and it'll have to go via ebay soon, as I am more than lucky with my other two snare drums).

Ralf, if I were you, I would keep that ine as a curio. It has some really top notch parts. Star muffler, high end lugs and hoops, it would be hard to part with in my hands. But it is a really cool one! Love it.

Sorry to dig up this old thread, but I think I have some nice examples of van der glas drums that add up to and further complete the story of Ralf.

Warning: lots of nice drums coming up, of which most are mine and not for sale.

First of all:

The Van der Glas company was founded in 1921 in The Netherlands.

They were known for their marching and concert drums. The company Van der Glas has had two badges with their name: namely the first one, an adhesive and the later badge that they used for most of their drums. This drum has both

In their early days they made rope tension drums (I have one, but they are ultimately rare, sorry no pics). In later days they made drums that can be separated in two groups: 1) drums with the hexagonal lugs like Ralf showed here and 2) drums with Tama look-a-like lugs. They started out with the hexagonal lug type, but in later days they used both lug types at the same time, according to my experience.

Here an example of an early drum with hexagonal lugs, it is produced according to Dutch standards => so no (pre)-international sizes, but cm-measures).

Here 2 examples of the Tama look-a-like lugs, both drums have the thin shell like Ralf's one and the plastic insert bearing edges, real 14" in diameter, 21cm deep.

Please note the double badges on both drums. Already from the 60/70s Vanderglas snares were fitted both the Vanderglas badge and the "Major" or "Majestic" badge. The Major badge is rare, the Majestic one was used until the 2000s.

Beside the Tama looks (lugs and damper), Vanderglas snares also show lots of similarities with Royal snares (also Dutch, from Amsterdam http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/royal/index.html).The parallel snare mechanism is almost an 1 on 1 copy of that of Royal drums and has been used for many years till the end 80s. At that time (the name vanderglas was exchanged by Majestic) the company came up with a new type of parallel mechanism that they still use today on some of their marching drums.

But the reason I got interested in Vanderglas drums, was that they made very nice special snare drums for the Dutch army bands (i.e. Dutch Navy band & Johan Willem Friso kapel)

The Dutch navy band drums:

-15(!) x 5.75"

-Brass shell, blue single flanged hoops

-gut snare wires

-in Vanderglas / majestic outfit, with early and late parallel snare mechanism

-Nice dry sound with lots of volume, me like

The Johan Willem Friso Kapel drums:

-Endeavor series

-14 x 12" with Majestic parallel snare mechanism

-Brass shell, blue diecast hoops

-Loud as ....., and causing you a hernia.

My apologies for spamming (my collection of) Vanderglas / Majestic drums. I hope you enjoyed it.
