Just putting this out there.....If we could have a moment of Complete Honesty here.If you found out a set of your drums had originally been stolen, what would you do? Really, and honestly, if there were now way to know from whom they were taken 35 years ago.... what would you really do?Just curious...... And, I'm sending Hawghunter a PM with my response to my question right now.Kev

It would be like finding out that my wife cheated 25 years ago, kept her silence, was true to me since and honestly loves me. Forgiveness is always given but I`d never look at the drums I love and grew to know the same way again !!

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

I have to agree with Kevins on this issue, if I read his post the way he intended it. Anyone who owns stocks, buys at Walmart or works for any form of the oil industry is just as guilty as supporting theft as this guy is for rocking a hot set of drums his old man gave him! It is easy to single out this instance since the dude fessed up about the origins of the drums. Yes, his stating how they were acquired did come across as somewhat detached and whateverish but we all know that the written word is unable to convey true emotion. I believe that everyone is reading much more of a celebratory tone into the OP than was ever intended, then by the time he responded, there were several accusatory rants posted to make his responses a given.

All of this talk of juju and mojo and voodoo is somewhat comical too as I am 100% sure that some members of this very site have bought stolen musical merchandise at some point, they just didn't know it was stolen.

have a wonderful evening

LMAO!

Perfect longjohn! Yep, indeed...

I agree with oddball and the majority of the folks that replied to this thread. The age of the deed isn't the issue. It's the original deed in itself that leaves a bad taste.

I'm no saint by any means, but I certainly can not condone theft, regardless of the length of time it's been since the theft took place.

Yeah- that's a fact!!! Do we know for certain the origins of the vintage kit we just bought? The only way to know for certain the kit you're currently playing or restoring is to have been the original owner.

While I did say earlier that when those drums were stolen from a train that someone lost; I also think that we should possibly think about the origins of some of the stuff we have recently bought- especially if it lacked badges and such, or if the kit was Frankensteined. You could have bought something that was stolen 25 or more years ago, and sold to anywhere from 1-20 subsequent owners. Hell- it could have been stolen two or three times!!!

Musical instruments are stolen far more than anything else (other than ***elery or copper pipe), as many of us play in pretty seedy places and don't have the benefit of bodyguards. I am not saying it's right, it's just a fact. The way to make a stolen item (drum kit, car, guitar, whatever) harder to trace? Take it apart and sell every single piece!!! How many of us bought those pieces to complete an old kit? We will never know...

I had a hot cymbal pass through my hands once and found out well after the time that I passed it on that it was stolen from some drum shoppe's basement!!! The person I traded with didn't do it, but I couldn't trust him after that fact came out. I was not happy and refused to trade with that person from that point forward!!! If I had known where it was stolen from, I would have given up everybody in the chain up to the po-po.

I also say that we probably shouldn't browbeat this fellow too badly. It's kind of a weird story to go with this drum kit. He didn't steal it, after all. But the attitude about it's origins is not one that I would share. But the OP is not me, after all.

Again- do what your conscience says is right.

Yeah- I'm THAT guy!!!

Hey my dad has this old set of Slingerlands from the 70s. He believes them to be about 1975. He bought them in 75 brand new off someone who stole them off a train. He took the serial numbers off in case he ever got caught. Anyone have any insight on to what the value of these may be? here are some pics......thanks!

Dude, you just ratted your own father out for trafficing in stolen property. I hope for your sake someone steals them from you, because knowing what you know about these drums would make you liable if you sell them too.

Just imagine all the witnesses for the prosecution when all of us here at the VDF are called to the stand to confirm the story you posted, Ha ha ha!
