Value of Buddy's Rogers Sticks? Last viewed: 3 days ago

Loading...

I have a pair of Buddy's Rogers' sticks that he gave me in 1966. These are very rare as they are the ones that Rogers sanded by hand to give the butt of the stick an hour glass profile. I also have a newspaper article from that same night that mentions my name and why this "young kid was by himself" at a BR concert when all his friends were home listening to the Beatles. :)

When he handed them to me they smelled like Old Spice and the scent lasted for at least a year. I didn't wear men's cologne at age 16, but I now knew what kind I would wear if I ever started.

These are in great shape, and you can read Rogers and Buddy Rich in blue ink. I've enjoyed these for a lot of years and wondering what the value might be if I decided to sell them. Thanks.

Hello Lyle!

I have the exact pair NOS/NIB in my collection of Buddy Rich sticks. I have in the collection, every model he used between the years of 1955 and 1980... all of them NOS/NIB. The fact that yours came from BR himself is way cool!, and yeah... I smelled the same Old Spice when I met with him back in 1973! This all said...

... value, well... not too long ago, those sticks would have brought approx. $300.00/pair, or maybe slightly MORE given that they were actually used by Buddy. Today... not so much. This has happened with all matter of drum/accessories in this economy. But!, the "value" or worth if you will, really resides in who might want them, and what they are willing to pay. Buddy has been gone for 27 years now, thus... items like that aren't bringing what they used to as so much time has passed.. the economy is still lousy.. and BR's biggest fan base is us!.. meaning .. 50 year old's or more. If you wanted to cut those sticks loose right after he passed away, well... I bet you could have gotten $500.00 or more for them. Today, not so. Regardless...

NICE item Lyle! And you never know!

Thanks Tommy, most appreciated. Glad to know I'm not nuts about the Old Spice. :) I remember the evening as if it were yesterday.

Lyle could you please post a few pictures of the sticks? Would be cool to see them. That must be a great memory for you to meet BR and get handed a pair of his used sticks! Old Spice was the first aftershave I wore as a yound man. That's funny Buddy wore it and then some!!

Hey Glenn!

Allow me to show this model stick as Lyle may not have pics of his. These are out of my collection and are EXACTLY like the pair Lyle has. Note the "scalloped" portion towards the rear. At the time, Buddy felt this improved his feel/grip of the stick. Interestingly, his WFL model prior to the Rogers, did NOT feature this "scalloping", but his Slingerland model did, although to a much subtler degree than the Rogers, which you can see is quite pronounced. These sticks are hard to find today... especially so in this condition. ENJOY!

Tommy thank you for the picture!! Man those are mint mint mint~! Very nice. Interesting scallop on them. Danny Seraphine had a Pro Mark sig stick but the scallop was shorter and deeper on his. Cool concept have you ever tried a pair to see how they are? Or do you just collect them? Yes indeed I bet those are real hard to find. I have to say your a walking talking Buddy Rich expert and we at VDF are so very lucky to have you here!

Funny you should ask that: "Have you ever tried a pair to see how they are" ? Well... yes and no! Goes without saying that one can't run down to the corner GC and buy a pair of these of course, so... when I finally found these, I HAD to try them out... but ONLY on a practice pad so as to not mark/mar them. I thought the "scallop" was kinda... odd. I didn't really "feel" the reasoning behind the what or why the "scallops" were there... well, at least for me that is. Buddy was a totally different story! Needless to say, traditional grip was the order of the day for Buddy, but he also switched to match grip here and there too, which REALLY makes this design feel even more odd. Buddy though... he liked 'em just fine!, but again... this whole concept disappeared later on during his Slingerland endorsement, never to be seen again. Very interesting on the Danny Seraphine model! I didn't know that his were "scalloped".

THANKS for the kind words Glenn! I tell ya... I've been a fan/researcher/historian on BR's drums/hardware/etc. for decades. Even after all this time I still enjoy it! Playing his signature set-ups doesn't hurt either!

Yes, mine are exactly like the ones Tommy posted. I think what might surprise you is how small a diameter and light they really are. Not what most of us would choose as a big band stick today. I'm surprised he didn't go through at least several every night.

Lyle, this is a great story and you have a pair of BR`s used sticks handled by the legend himself. Not even TommyP can claim to owning such a set and that is saying something as he IS one of the very best BR historians/collectors on the planet. But to have a pair of BR`s sticks with battle scar marks on them-priceless...And TommyP your stick collection is amazing and your wonderful BR. knowledge is appreciated as always.Great stuff here!
