value of a 4 pc. Leedy Drum Set

Loading...

Hello,

We have a 4 pc. Leedy Drum Set that I would like to have appraised if at all possible. I will supply as much information as possible below:

Drum shell material – wood

Finish – white marine pearl

Badge - 1949-1950 Leedy Blue and Brass Badge

Dimensions - SD – 6” x 14”; mounted Tom – 9” x 13”, floor Tom – 16” x 16”; BD – 14” x 24”

Interior finish – SD, mounted Tom and BD are painted white; floor Tom is not, may have been stripped (?)

Hardware – SD – 8 lugs, mounted Tom – 6 lugs, floor Tom – 8 lugs, BD – 10 lugs w. wooden/pearl inlaid hoops

SD Strainer – hard to describe but the pictures on your website don’t match what we have.

I don’t really see any defects or extra holes anywhere on the drums. The pearl finish has somewhat yellowed given its age. Inside the shell of the SD it is possible to see the number “4911” which I assume might be the date of manufacture (?). Sorry, I’m more of a mallet instrument expert, not a drum expert!

If you need any additional information from me please let me know. I can supply photos as well. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer!

Thanks for the responses. I will try to post a picture or 2 over the next few days. As of right now we are not looking to sell the set. I am just trying to get an appraised value for insurance purposes.

Well, if you are looking for an appraisal your insurance company will accept, you may have to contact one of the vintage drum retail stores and have it certified. Our opinions will have little validity where your insurance company is concerned. I find they will only want to pay you a replacement value as they don't care if they are "vintage" or not. In the insurance game, they are just old. That means depreciation, which would be devaluing to you. You may need to have them covered under an antiques policy, which is far different than a normal policy. Vintage and antique are not always the same.

They see old drums as just that, old drums, and therefore they will only pay for a comparable sized kit, whether they can replace the exact kit with exact drums or not. In other words, they would likely want to pay you for nothing more than an intermediate priced kit, at best. Remember, they are looking out for the investors, not the covered.

Thanks and I understand all that. I'm really just looking for an estimate; are they worth $300 or $3000? Any guesses would be appreciated!

$1000 is probably a good reference point, but condition is everything! Could be worth quite a bit less - dependant on modifications, chrome/nickle pitting, wrap condition, etc. As stated before - WE NEED PICS.
