Used Drum Gear from Guitar Center Online..Be Careful!

Loading...

Greetings,

About the only good thing about Guitar Center is that you can see their entire used gear inventory throughout the country online. Generally speaking, most of their used drum stuff is reasonably/fairly priced (unless it's "Vintage" of course........................). I browse their used cymbals, kits and hardware typically once a week or so. I have gotten some good deals. However, I just wanted to share a cautionary tale with you:

When browsing cymbals recently, I noticed one for $19.99 that read "Used Miscellaneous 1960's 18" Cymbal". With the accompanying picture, it sure looked like an A. Zildjian, and by using the zoom feature on the picture, I was able to decipher a Zildjian trademark. It was hard to tell, but it looked like it possible that it had an ID Stamp under the trademark (which would put it at 1994 or newer). Obviously, there were no ink logos anywhere on it. I figured I would take a chance, because even if it didn't sound good to me, there is always at least some resale value in an A. Zildjian cymbal, regardless of era.

I got it today, and was very disappointed. What was in the box was a cheap, brass 18" cymbal that was stamped "Kingstone- Japan". It is clearly not what was pictured on their website. I think even a cymbal novice could tell the difference between an A. Zildjian and a Japan made brass cheapy. The problem is, once you (or anyone else) buys something off the GC website, that listing disappears the next day. So, even if I took the cymbal back to Guitar Center (you have 30 days for a full refund), how can I prove that the cymbal I received was not the one pictured in their listing?

That's a long story, but from now on, what I am going to do (and I recommend to you as well) is to save the picture(s) of the item listed on the website on your computer or phone, and keep it until you receive the item and are satisfied with the purchase.

I don't necessarily think GC was being misleading, but I wouldn't put it past them. Saturday I saw another cymbal for $19.99 that read "Used 20" Miscellaneous Cymbal" that also looked exactly like an A. Zildjian. I'm glad I didn't pull the trigger on that.

I don't think I will bother returning a $20 cymbal, although with tax and shipping it was over $40. The cymbal actually doesn't sound bad, but it's very dry with not much sustain, and is pretty thin. I think two rivets might make this a decent light ride cymbal that I can also crash on.

Just be careful dealing with GC online. Like I said, keep the pictures, otherwise if the item is not as described on the website, you have no proof of what the original website listing contained.

Thanks,

V

Did you attempt to get a refund? Whether or not the GC ad was misleading is immaterial to the issue. What was pictured was not was you paid for. I would definitely return it for a refund. Or at least a credit.

Even better - take a screenshot of the ad, enlarging the page if necessary [Ctrl+ on a PC] so that you have proof it's not some random pic from your computer.

Glad to hear the cymbal was not a total loss.

I've purchased more than a few used items in GC stores, but only one thing online - a hammered bronze Supra. I don't remember why - maybe just being cautious - but I contacted the drum department, and asked the guy if he'd mind taking some additional pics. The next day I received a dozen fresh pics by email, and called him back, thanked him, and bought the drum.

After reading the first post, I will always request some extra pics if there's any doubt or concern about the item. AND get a screenshot of the original listing!

After rivets, you might actually really end up loving that cymbal. I have some old MIJ ride cymbals (most people know my "MIJ Ride Cymbals" video) that I have really grown to love. They surely have a specific application, but once you get used to it, it really can grow on you.

I once was playing with a veteran band leader (20 years older than me, 20 years more experienced). I had about 5 ride cymbals with me that I swapped out in the course of the jam. I asked him which one he liked best, it was the 20 inch CARAVAN. While I wish it had a bit more sustain, it certainly had a really great vintage tone and was a perfect balance between ride/crash. I had bought that as part of a maneuvering in a business deal - and did not expect the surprise to like it so much once I got it. One of my favs now!

BTW - this particular Caravan is NOT in my MIJ RIDE CYMBAL video.

As far as the thread topic (in a more related story) - this very thing happened to me too once. I called and complained. Within the next hour the manager called me and really hooked me up. I ended up with an equivalent (much more expensive used cymbal) and he also threw in come other goodies. The initial arrangement with him was that I was going to return the cymbal. By the end I asked him about how that was going to happen and he said just to keep it. He stated that he was much more concerned with keeping me as a customer than to get the product back. It was good business for him and it certainly worked. I continue to buy off their site. INFO - I did not have any pic of the ad and it had been removed off the site when sold. Didn't matter - he still took care of me (and then some).

I think the wrong pictures happen when either it is a newbie making a mistake or a simple mistake which happens when they are understaffed and overworked. Sometimes that have alot of work to do to get those all listed - mistakes happen as a result of the workload. Works for me - so long as they remember the rule: customer is always right and customer satisfaction always comes first.

As much as GC has hurt the industry by being the Walmart of our industry, it has it's perks. We have to appreciate them for what they bring to the scene - as they are not going away anytime soon!

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

recently i've been helping a customer look for some ludwig snares and i checked the s.a. and g.c. used website to see what they have.

while on the g.c. site all i could say is "wow"...there were many ludwig snares that said one thing in the description and the pic showed another. even a beginner drummer with his first job at g.c. should tell the difference between a ludwig spura and a ludwig WOOD snare.

seriously, how in the hell does that happen multiple times? i have read many times on the forums about people scoring deals and that the store has to honor those deals even if they messed up, so i guess you guys should keep your eyes peeled on their used site because they're f**king up left and right.
