URGENT: thoughts on this 1960s Rogers kit

I've been eyeing up this kit. I'll be buying for $800. It sounds great, looks great, etc.

Then I see he got some negative reviews here:

SHOULD I BUY THIS KIT? I REALLY LIKE IT! Is this a fake kit or what? I don't even know what to think anymore.

I would PM VDF member The Ploughman. Those pics look really unclear and the drums way to perfect to me,as well as the reference to picking out a snare drum from his private collection reference. My spidey sense is tingling, especially that the seller is in Ontario.

I know you love vintage drums, but I would educate myself some more, and depending on where you live,go to a drum show or a store that sells authenticated vintage drums.Places like Steve Maxwells two drum shops in Chicago I think and NYC ,have the real deal.Nothing beats hands on experience.

I would also purchase some or all of Rob Cooks,John Aldridge,or Harry Canganys books on American vintage drums. And lastly....take your time, learn all you can. There are plenty of humanoids selling fakes,as well as some who were duped, and just want to unload their mistake.

The market will still be what it is for a while now. This place is full of knowledge and expertise, that you just can't put a price on.

Yes, I would take a deep breath and hold off for more info. If the seller has a bad rep, I'd be very cautious. No seller who knows their vintage drums and market value gives away their stuff below market value out of the goodness of their heart. If it looks too good to be true, it is. A blue onyx set, even a Fullerton era set (which is still a great set of drums) in good to excellent condition with no extra holes or mods with a snare out of his "collection", I would think would sell for about $1000-1200 USD +. Not sure where the Canadian dollar is at but... I'd want to make sure the edges are factory right off the bat and then ask about the wrap, original or rewrap.

These Rogers are beautiful instruments and there are plenty of them out there. Take your time.

Excellent advice! Remember always... if it's too good to be true, chances are it is!

Personally I would avoid them . I am dealing with a scammer right now from here on VDF and DFO trying to get money back with no luck . If I would have had any inkling on what this dude was about I would have passed on the drums I am now stuck with . So in the future if I even think there may be a problem with a seller I am walking away . Another set of drums will always come along .

I wish we had a section for sellers to avoid either on the forums or ebay . I would have avoided a huge pain in the ... if I had known earlier .

Warning ... Avoid member statuscymbal here, vintage_collector on DFO , and americanpatriot10 on eBay. Email me for his name. All are the same shady guy who has burned me and a list of other members on both boards . He is also selling on Facebook too ..

It's just the bass drum, 13" tom, and 16" floor tom. If i want a snare it will cost extra.

I just went and played them again. They sound fantastic. They have all the badges and interior stickers... the wrap itself is in great condition. the have some dings and scratches here and there but they're amazing.

The guy lives 5 minutes away from me, he's taken me into his home to see his collection... if you were gonna scam someone would you invite them into your home?

I think I'm going to buy 'em. If i get screwed, well I can show up to his house with the kit lmao.

I would strongly advise asking if they were re-wrapped. The Blue Onyx one can buy today looks pretty close to the vintage stuff. If they are rewrapped, that brings down the value considerably. Also, the edges, if they were recut, that brings down the value.

Again, if this guy is the same person referred to in the link that you offered with your original post, I'd expect there is a reason why the set is selling cheap.

If you don't care one way or the other about selling them and getting your money back down the road, then by all means, trust instinct and have at it. Good luck.

I asked if they were re-wrapped: he said no, it's all original.

I also asked if the bearing edges had been cut: nope, all original.

Is a Fullerton kit (3pc, 20" bass, 13" tom, 16" floor) really that cheap?

I can see the matching snare on the rack...I think. If you sat down and played the kit, like the kit, and want the kit....Buy the kit. The price is steep though for just a shellpack.
