I really like the wrap on this bass drum:

It's almost like Black Diamond Pearl with some yellow or gold in it.

I also dig the mount and the baseball bat cymbal holder (I presume).

Three ply-with rings. Any guess on the badge?

This is a cool finish too, you just can't beat BDP. I like the Ludwig bow-tie copies, and long lugs:

Dig the spring loaded brackets!

Any guesses?

Unless someone can prove me wrong, by best (somewhat educated) guess is that this is an early Pearl made set. Both Star and Pearl made thin 3 ply shells with re-rings early on, but I've found that Pearl always used standard threaded/sized t-rods and swivelnuts. If this set has standard threaded rods, that would probably be the clue. The tabby looking fastener on the rack tom mount is another Pearl clue as well. This drum should have a large washer on the inside of the tom mount.

The badge on the bass drum looks like the 'Norma' shape, so that may have been the stencil name on this set.

Pretty good guessing cn679..Yes to me the bass drum is made by Pearl the badge does look like a Norma badge, also the tom mount,"L" arm mount are Pearl made-{just a side note if anyone needs any of these two mounts i have them many of them in stock}--The floor tom is made by Star but would not be a Star badged drum again one of 40 names they would have used. These lugs were only used for a few years i think from 1963-65 there are hard lugs to fine today. In fact i just sold the last 7 of these lugs to a member. On the flor tom leg mounts on the drum Pearl made these types but so did Star. These are Star mounts Pearls mounts would be alittle bigger in size..Mikey

Hello folks

I have two different color mij drum shells

one is a 14"sky blue sparkle snare

the other is red sparkle 12"mounted tom

Both have the identical styled lugs

and both are "Norma" badged drums

The rs tom has both original "Norma' logo heads intact

My very first kit at 13 or 14 was an orange sparkle 4 piece Norma kit

single mounted tom on rail consolette

It had separate lugs for each head and they were not like these we are discussing now

with the indentical lugs, tom mount reciever,

and baseball bat style cymbal arm bracket. as your bass drum above

I have the WMP bass drum paired up with a red marine pearl? mounted tom no badge and a blue marine pearl? "Tempro" (w/badge) snare drum

and hunting around for any old beater floor tom in bdp to finish them off

Hey Mikey, those lugs (as pictured here) you are referring to were indeed sold to me (your last 7), though they were for a Stagemaster, and you told me it was 66-68 and made by Pearl. Not trying to call you out, or embarass you or anything - just seeking clarification so I know for sure what I have.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

New here, so not sure if it's kosher to raise this thread from the dead...

But i just found a bass and rack tom with the same bow tie lugs. Drums have now badge and i really would like to know as much about the drums as possible. I posted a separate thread and it was suggested that they could be Norma brand. But in this thread it's suggested both star and pearl made these lugs. Any guidance here on who the maker of these lugs are, and/or the Norma brand?

The floor looks like a non star Hoshino. And as far as the bass drum, that cymbal L-arm mount I've seen before. That sucker is very specific. We find who made that and that's the answer.

"Looks like..." is that definitive?

So now we have Pearl, Star, and non-Star Hoshino as maker of that bow-tie lug floor tom!

I guess we've at least narrowed it down to MIJ... :)

I don't personally think Star or Pearl made that. I'd need a better close up, but from what I'm seeing it looks 100% Hoshino. They had a very unique lugs. I say " looks like " because the photo isn't good enough for me to make a 100% guess. But I'm 90% the floor tom is Hoshino, not Star or Pearl.

The bass drum, that I'm honestly not sure. Could be either of the three. But if I can figure that L-arm mount for the cymbal, that'll be the feature that gives away the maker.

Little digging on the Drum Guide and I'd say that bass drum is 100% Star made, not Pearl. Pearl ( and I looked as far back as possible ) didn't have a cymbal mount that looked like that. Just the standard L-rod mount. Where as early Star kits used that mount with the little handle. Only appears in the early '60s catalogs. The tom mount on the bass was also Star. So between the two and the shell that's my guess.

We're starting to see more that some if not many of the names were manufactured by one, two, or all three of the MIJ makers. Hence the importance of a complete guide that lists exactly who made what and when. This way even with no badge, or with we can readily ID these kits to within a good degree of accuracy based on lug,mount,etc...
