Unique early 60's Acrolite - Thanks Mike! Last viewed: 9 hours ago

Loading...

With the kit my wife bought me this Acrolite was part of the bundle. I found a few things that thanks to Mike (mlayton) he was able to answer.

1. Low serial number but red felt tone control

2. COB hoops

3. Wood snare screws with strange washer

Check it out!

To be fair to my wife I sold my cherry 1967 Acro but this guy has some cool things going on that make me not miss the other. The sound on this one compared to Acros without COB hoops is nicer to my ears.

There are some cool and rare anomalies out there...especially during transition periods. I sold an Acro to Mike a couple of years ago that was pre-serial, had COB hoops, and get this...had crimped snare beds!

Very interesting. It looks like someone lost the aluminum caps and rigged up something with washers, bushings/sleeves and wood screws. But ... since all of the caps are gone, it makes me wonder if this was something done at the factory. I can't imagine Ludwig ran out of caps and machine screws, since both the Supra and Acrolite used them.

I still think someone misplaced the pieces after a tear down and improvised.

I'd guess that could be factory, if they ran short of the cup washers they'd figure something out to keep drums moving out the door.

Check out a Standard metal shell snare sometime, instead of cup washers they put speed nuts around the outside of the screw bosses, cutting it's own thread into the metal. I suppose it saved a few pennies per drum.

I have a couple of early Acros with the red felt BB and the COB hoops, they have just that extra bit of "zing" to them.

that's a great drum. I told Manny that Ludwig certainly had a reputation for doing whatever it took to get a drum out the door. my first thought was the spacers looked like grommet spacers. didn't mention that to Manny and that's also what he came up with. that would certainly make sense.

Dredging up an old thread but...

I just picked up a '64 Acrolite with the same wood screw/cup washer set-up. I thought it was a frankendrum, but now I know better.

Now, she's mine!

We've been passing this one around between us like a two dollar hooker on a Saturday night! LOL

Great drum BTW.

John :D

Too many great drums to list here!

I feel honored to be part of an acro mystery! Call me crazy but I prefer an acro with COB hoops over an alloy supra.
