Unidentifiable MIJ Floor Tom

Loading...

I recently picked up this MIJ floor tom, but can't seem to identify what MIJ brand it is. I have never seen this lug design before. Any ideas?

Also, if anyone needs this to complete a kit or for some other reason feel free to make an offer. I have no use for it. Thanks.

Those,my friend, are the INCREDIBLY RARE Kent "Coffin"lugs.MAYBE one year of production, somewhere near Kent's changeover from U.S.to MIJ shell construction.A fellow drummer in my H.S.days bought a set of American shelled Coffin-lugged Kent drums. His set,if I recall, was white swirl 12/13/16/20.I may be overstating ,but these may be some of the rarest American lugs.

That one set in H.School is the only set of Kent Coffin-lugged drums I have EVER seen.and I'm 52........

I also noticed the remains of the Kent badge around the vent hole. You'd better remove the head and take a pic of the interior-50/50 chance it's the 1 year only drum.

That muffler knob is certainly a Pearl part. As T states, a look inside would help ID the actual maker.

Our friends @ Kent assembled drums with whatever was lying around-especially if it was the cheapest thing lying around(more towards the end).An American shell with a Pearl muffler and tom legs is easily a possibility.

Understand this is not meant to be a diss on Kent-they must have been under incredible pressure by the MIJ's to keep costs down.As a matter of fact,I have a special place in my heart for Kent-they were my first set!

The leg mount brackets look like Star parts...and I believe it was Star that got the contract to build the MIJ versions of the Kent line, is that correct Tom?

I cannot with any certainty comment on Pearl vs Star on that point. The MIJ Kents had a sticker or rectangle badge, according to the website here.

Only an interior photo and check of the inside of the tom leg mount will verify either-or.It's either Luan or Maple.

Regardless of what the drum is made of... those lugs are far to cool.

Here are some interior photos of the drum. Doesn't look like an MIJ shell to me. Notice the knots in the wood of the inner ply. They almost look like extra holes that have been repaired but they aren't.

Also, by looking at the bearing edges the shell looks kinda like a 7 ply Gretsch to me. I doubt that's the case, but that's what I see.

Any thoughts?
