Unbadged Vintage Ludwigs...

Loading...

Hi guys,

I've been restoring an old Classic kit over the past few months that were seemingly cannibalized years back. I got the shells, sans most of the hardware, for dirt cheap and have been buying parts as I see them pop up. Thankfully, they're in great shape, but someone took off the badges long ago...

I was originally planning to keep this kit for my studio, but I'm REALLY enjoying my Yamahas and I don't really have the space for both at the moment... I had originally not planned on buying any badges for the set, as $20-35 a piece for a part that in no way affects the sound or usability is a little silly. However, now that I'm considering selling them, I'm curious to how much not having those badges is going to affect the value of it?

Mostly, my dillemma is that I don't want to misrepresent the kit in anyway. Obviously, I'd be upfront about the badges being replacements, but will most buyers be turned off by this? What options do I have?

It would not bother me, if you going to sell them please send me a PM. I would be interested in them if they are 3ply Ludwig shells. I dont care if they have badges.

Thank you!

Here's a pic (few weeks old, before I finished the rack toms):

The set is now nearly complete, just waiting on the vintage t-rods I bought to come in, plus the double tom post.

The two rack toms (not pictured) are 6-ply with re-rings and clear interiors, which I bought after getting the bass and floor tom, which are 3-ply with re-rings and granitone interiors.

Legs and mounts on the floor tom, claws on the bass drum and the spur mount and spurs are brand new, everything else is vintage. No extra holes have been drilled on any of the shells.

P.S. No - the pinstripes aren't staying on them, I just thought they sounded cool with them as "concert-style" drums. They now have some nice coated Aquarians with thin resos ;)

I have a very nice 13" LUD GS shell here still I think.....

That would complete your drumset!

GS is somewhat hard to find too....

Looks like brand new spurs and floor tom legs/brackets...

These look pretty good to me. IMO, they would probably sell faster if you were to purchase reproduction badges, but may not bring any more money than what you would get selling to someone who appreciates them!

Already have a 12" and a 13" to complete the set, just didn't have them when this pic was taken ;)

Yep, the spurs and legs/brackets are brand new, as are the claws (all Ludwig, though). Price on new pieces were about the same, or even lower, than vintage and this way, I knew they would be solid for years to come.

You'd purchase reproductions over actual vintage badges? From my searches on eBay, they look to be around the same price, either way, but I'm conflicted about putting real badges on there, with a serial number that's not actually matched to the drum. At the same time - I'm also conflicted about buying reproduction badges, which are technically made illegally :P

I've been in the same boat, so to speak. And have done it both ways. The last kit I did I had some badges that were period correct (rounded corner B/O badges on a late 70s kit) that weren't in the greatest overall shape (a few scratches and dings), but it did seem to make the "refurbished" and rewrapped kit a little more "authentic."

One thing about yours... there was a period of time when Ludwig did not put serial numbers on the badges. I think (without double-checking the charts and books) that coincides with part of the granitone interiors run in the early 70s. So on this kit, the repros might work out fine, as will the "new" classic hardware you've added.

That's one thing I really like about Ludwig! They've brought back a lot of their older hardware that has the look and feel of the vintage stuff, but in most cases, better!

Good looking set... I hope to see completed pics!
