Two Tone Gretsch

Loading...

I saw this advert on Reverb and immediately took note of it because it is a copy (unlikely to be the exact same one) of one of the first drum sets I really took notice of in a small drum shop in Haverhill, MA where I was taking lessons as a young teenager. Gretsch Progressive Jazz in white satin flame. As new, it was gorgeous.

However, I never looked under the bass drum. If I had, I might have been surprised. Seller says this:

"The underside of the bass drum has a piece of yellow satin flame instead of white satin flame - this is factory and not unheard of for Gretsch."

I guess it would be similar to receiving a Rogers kit with twins toms that had the mounts on the wrong side so that the badges would be inward if set up correctly.

Even so, I'd have been some disappointed if I arrived home, opened the boxes and found a similar malady.

Still, those drums sound great and I'd like to have that Gretsch set even if only for the memory of it. [Attachment: [Attachment: 132096]]

I sincerely doubt the veracity of the seller's claim that the unmatched piece of wrap on the underside was a factory-original feature of the bass drum. I think that the gold Satin Flame piece of wrap was either original to an all gold drum that was re-wrapped in white except for the bottom. Or, the factory-original white drum needed a repair on the bottom, and a scrap of gold wrap was the only available piece that was on hand. I have serious doubt that Gretsch would let a drum like that leave the factory unless someone ordered it specifically that way........even then, would they honor that wish?

I'm not trying to start an agrument with Steve Maxwell. But, I still doubt whether Gretsch would let a bass drum leave the factory with that mis-matched wrap.

irregardless that set is a buy; I had a satin Yellow flame (gold but looked yellow) all-original same size same small lug 14"---match 4157 Should have never sold. Satin Flame sound warmer and like he mentions is thinner wrap- stock remo's fit--- that set 1700$ shipped would be a bargain.

small lug 14s look better..keep that set for 25 years..enjoy it...and double your money in 2040 (ha

I would be almost positive that this drum has silver satin flame on the bottom that turned that color. I highly doubt a bass drum with mis-matched wrap would leave the factory that way. I think what would concern me would be why it turned that color. It almost makes me think water damage. I could be wrong though as Steve has seen way more Gretsch drums then I will ever see.

Wrap can change colors like that though. I have a 1969 mod orange set that is pretty evenly faded throughout. The bottom of the bass drum looks brand new. It's amazing because the colors change right where the edges of the top piece of wrap are. It's like night and day and that underside piece is completely un-faded.

that was a Good-looking set at a good-looking price even tho It had some Miles on it... Didn't last long..

Looked better than the other same size Silver Satin Flame Maxwell has up now (at a much higher price)

the 14x14 :looked" better (the FT small lugs were closer to edge) on the two tone set)
