Pan - You don't use your good one or one that you use for music. Any Goodwill will have working turntables available for as little as $3 to $5. That's what I recommend using... not your old favorite $1000. Marantz belt driven table. lol

Great job Purdie.

Someone on the Pearl Drummers Forum did a great job doing their own duco finish also. They taped the rattle spray can to a Cymbal stand and to make sure they were spraying the same height and distance each time. You certainly could use multiple stands for each color to make sure you were getting the EXACT height each time.

Sounds good in principle, but you need to control the spray pattern carefully at the fade points. Which basically means being able to position the spray-can right where you need it, manually. Eye/hand coordination. If the can is strapped to a stand, you won't be able make the tiny adjustments in position and distance when you need to.

I start at the top edge and work my way down to the fade point, and from the bottom up - (for the dark color.) The center stripe can be done by securing the spray can in one position, but why bother. Just hold the can steady for a few seconds and viola! Duco!! The turntable does all the work.

Great job John, they look killer Cool1. I'd love to do a set in Duco paint colors, so I will be on the hunt for some shells that need a good home. Thanks for the great step by step tutorial. Now , What colors to use??? Hmmmm

Just about any combination of colors you think look good together. If you go 'traditional' Duco combo's, there's some nice rare ones you should check out. I went to old catalogs to do research. After some serious consideration, (I knew I'd have to live with whatever I chose,) I settled on the green/gold combo. But I was sorely tempted to do red/cream/red and turquoise/silver/turquoise. Both are beautiful color combinations. You might also want to consider doing a three-tone wood stain finish! Like a Les Paul guitar sunburst finish. Lots of choices.

Purdie, I am going to try out your technic as soon as I get some time. Only I want to try a fade from dark to light using dyes. I was trying to think of a way to make a variable speed turn table. How does one speed work with different diameter drums, is it just not enought to notice a difference? Cant wait to play around with it.

JC - 33 1/3 RPM is enough. Any faster and your drum will fly off the table. 33 1/3 is perfect... for all size shells. Let the shell continue spin for a bit after you stop spraying, it'll make drying time quicker and help to keep the paint from forming drip patterns in case you over sprayed.

Several very light coats will give a better finish than one or two heavy ones.
