Tucking heads on an old drum??

I've been looking at this old Gretsch drum and it almost looks like the heads were tucked similar to tucking conga drum heads. I'm wondering why you can see the calfhide excess on the top of the head.........= it looks like it's been trimmed off. It's not like your regular "calfhide tucking job."

Not critisizing here but I just want to understand how this was done....

What do you think?

The drum is a Gretsch 1910-20....

UP-DATE:

Okay.........I got an answer from the guy that owns the drum. He tucked the heads the same way you tuck a banjo head but he didn't trim the head off in the usual manner = close to the rim/head. It works okay I guess.

Nice drum.
