Trying to Identify Snare (Slingerland, or knock-off?) Last viewed: 7 hours ago

Loading...

Hi all,

I'm brand new to the forum and happy to be here. I'm hoping someone may be able to help me identify a vintage (1970s?)

5 x 14, 8 lug, snare that I picked up at a garage sale over the weekend.

I did read DrCJW's articles, and while I learned a great deal, I still can't seem to identify the drum. It has no badges and no markings that I can see. I did a google image search for vintage strainers, and it closely resembles the Slingerland Zoomatic. It's not exactly the same, however, and it lacks the Slingerland engraving across the front.

The shell's in great shape, and the dark red sparkle finish is very pretty and intact. The rims and lugs are unbent, and that's really all the nice things I can say. It was not taken care of well. It's very dirty, the chrome is badly rusted and peeling off, the muffler was removed, there's no snares and only the remains (I think) of a snare butt. I know nothing of it's history, other than it's most recent owner was a jr. high aged neighbor kid who's trying to save up to buy his first kit.

I don't imagine it's actually a Slingerland. Why would someone remove the badge if it was? I'm eager to hear anyone's ideas on what drum this might be or other avenues of research I might pursue to solve this mystery.

(FYI- I'm not trying to sell it; I'm simply curious. The drum I use for the little bit of playing I do, is a 1971 Olympic by Premier. I actually bought this one because I couldn't stand to leave the poor, forlorn thing lying there on the ground. I also thought it would make a good summer restoration project. My son's girlfriend is majoring in Inst. Music Ed, and as a future band director, she's supposed to build a stockpile of instruments to learn on. I thought we could work on it together, and I could teach her some of the basics. Hands on is the best way to learn!)

Thanks for providing this wonderfully informative forum!

Well it's not a Slingerland... I'd say a 60's Star or Hoshino copy based "broadly" on a Slingerland... and would have been made in Japan..

(still an interesting collectible for many)

Welcome to the forum!

I agree with LongJohn. I have the same snare and a 3 piece kit that matches! I paid $100 for it all plus cymbals.

Great idea to pass along your knowledge! This forum can help with all sorts of drum related questions.

The lugs look like Pearl to me - meanwhile the knob on the snare strainer looks like Star. It was made in 1967 or earlier. The condition is poor and limits the value even within the range of what an old Japan snare drum would be.

I am afraid that snare is only worth about $20-40 (most likely closer to 20 than 40).

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

I will say a Pearl built drum from the mid-sixties. Square based Sound-King knockoffs are Pearl. And I'm pretty sure the round eared rims are Pearl.

Thanks for the warm welcome and all the insights everyone! I only paid $5 for the snare, so I feel like I will get far more than my money's worth as a teaching tool.
