Trimming a little off the 14" FT wrap?

I want to fit modern heads on my Gretsch 14" floor tom. I need to cut the Gold Sparkle (early 60's - late 50's?) wrap down a tad to make this happen. I want to do it so the hoop covers the exposed shell - just like my new Gretsch 14" ft looks with its Champagne Sparkle wrap. It should not be that difficult but I'd like to do it right - no mistakes.

Without buying one of those $120 special wrap cutting tools what is my next best option and how do I do it? Anyone here done this?

Kona,This is the way i do this..First put the head rim on the drum and tune the drum up,then take tape and go around the shell.Take the head and rim off the drum and cut the plastic with a very sharp knife alittle up from the tape...Mikey

I rember seeing a trimming tool somewhere that will do just that. Maybe in an issue of NSMD a few issues ago.

Thanks guys!

Yes - there is a tool - $130 or more for me to buy it.

I will try "Mikey's" Method - it sounds like that will work just fine. I'll make sure to take my time - make sure I have a new sharp blade - do the first cut lightly and do a lot of passes until I get through the wrap.

New blades cut through plastic QUITE nicely. I am not being sarcastic here- I used to do RC cars, and building new bodies REQUIRED new blades- slightly used blades were DISASTER!!!!

Yeah- I'm THAT guy!!!
