Tricky Trixon Project

With the help and encouragement of Diamond (Dave) I have taken the plunge into Trixon ownership with this challenging looking project. I have given myself the insurance of not paying a whole lot for what you see so it made it worth a crack. It's due to arrive in a day or so.

It's an early model Telstar with the big 16/20 floor tom and as you can see it needs help.

It was only the sellers 3rd ever drum kit, purchased many years ago. In the intervening years a great nephew got his hands on it and destroyed the small tom and snare (some hardware appears to have been saved though) and also had a good go at wrecking the bass drum by adding the Pearl style mount which will have left its mark. So, I'll be on the look out for a tom which shouldn't be too hardCoffee Break2 It does come with the cymbal arm too I'm told, which is nice.

The snare was bought 5 years ago by the seller and his son has been slowly working his way through restoring it. Rims have even been rechromed. There are no wires unfortunately. It appears to be a 50s model and in metric size. It apparently has new heads. His son has been slowly restoring the other drums too but gave up and went overseas.

Will post more photos when it arrives

Crocodile wrap is a showstopper.

Good luck with the project. I am part way through a never ending rehab of an aquamarine Luxus set (no snare). Nice sound and playing feel.

Not sure what I would do about the tom holder and patching any plugs with wrap.

Have fun and keep us posted.

thanks Patrick. I'm not sure how bad the tom holder holes will be yet but I'll think of something. I will keep you updated here. I suspect it may also be a never ending rehab

well the kit arrived and all is as i thought it'd be. The snare is very nice but has no wires and is fitted with new metric heads that are smooth and seem a little cheap. It's a very cool little drum though.

The bass drum is the problem drum. The Pearl mount has left big holes but they should be plugable (that may be a made up word) and the original mounts, which came with it, should cover the worst of it.

The other problem drum is the one that is conspicuous by its absence. So the search is on for a ride tom that matches. Easy...

What a beautiful set, with three horrible holes! Of course you'll plug the holes, you might want to rotate the whole bass drum 180° and get those holes towards the bottom.

Hey Rik, that's one idea but it would require a lot of drilling and the spur mounts would need to be moved. I'm going to assemble the drum with the correct mounts and see how it looks then (It arrived completely stripped for shipping). It might be quite surprising how much is hidden behind the various mounts. There will be some exposed partial holes but I'll plug them and try and color the plugs to blend in. Needless to say, it's going to be a players kit

OK, so I might have been a bit optimistic about how much would be hidden by the mountsDOH You can also see it is fitted with two tom mounts on the bass drum. I suspect this was done early on but the extra mounts I have don't quite fit the indentation that the original mount has left. So maybe it was some other Trixon mount. I know the cymbal arm mount normally goes there but it doesn't fit the hole spacing.

The 20" side of each drum is slightly under 20" so I can't get the BD head on without forcing the tension rods into the lugs. They are going to need spacers but the shape of the drum doesn't help either. There are other irregularities but i'm too tired to talk about them now after all the assembly, which wouldn't normally be that hard but in this case...

Andrew wow these are so cool. I always liked the funky Trixon styles and colors!! The bass does not look that bad with everything on there. I think your idea of plugs and color matching will blend them in nicely. Hope you can find a small tom along the way.

Glenn.

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.
