touching up 60s Rogers bass hoops

Loading...

Can somebody please offer me some tips on touching up or refinishing the black paint on the counter hoops of my mid 60s Rogers bass drum? I don't think they'd need stripping as really only the back hoop has been messed up by pedal attachments and other attachments. I could easily go at it with a brush and some enamel, but thought I might learn something if I ask first.

Anywhere wood is showing should be primed first so the finish coat will bond to the hoop. It's not a huge deal to repaint the whole hoop. You don't have to strip off the old paint just tape off the inlay and sand down the hoop with 120. Don't go nuts with the sanding you just need to scuff up the surface. Wipe down the hoop with a damp cloth and apply to thin coats of primer and 3 thin coats of finish. give the hoop a light sand between coats with fine grit sand paper for a nice smooth finish. I've done this many times using KRYLON spray paint and the hoops look great

Thanks rillo, but I'm not that energetic and I don't think i needed to go to that extreme.

I taped off the pink champagne sparkle, sanded lightly, suspended from the ceiling and gave several coats of Rustoleum semi gloss black. In all it took maybe 45 minutes. I don't think they could look any better and I'm betting they are about how they look when new.
