Kit: Early 60's Slingerland Modern Solo Outfit with (2) - 12" tom toms
Back Story: I started a thread, in the restoring forum, about replacing the current hardware. The resolution I came up with was to get NOS replacement plates that mount to the toms (not done, but still planning on purchasing so I have good looking original hardware) and then fabricate something to push the toms out at the bottom (done).
Result: Immediately I noticed (2) things. The first was the sound of the tom toms and the bass drum. The sound of each drum is now cleaner and much more defined. Second was the position of the tom toms, they feel much more natural.
Let the scheming begin: So now I want to separate the tom toms from themselves and the bass drum. I like systems like the Pearl ISS or the Optimounts because they can be secured to an existing stand. However, the ISS seemed like it could deform the rim after a repeated thrashing and there was a lot of play on the setup I saw (the toms were rotating several degrees around the mounting point). The Optimounts seemed better because they have four separate mounting points. In the setup I saw there was play in all directions, not a lot, but just enough to make me nervous. I think most of the play could be taken out with proper adjustment.
Now I'm looking into snare stands. I like the promise of better sound and more adjustability, but I don't like the idea of introducing (2) more stands to my kit. Not enough to keep me from considering it, though. With all that said, what are snare stand suggestions? Pictures of kits with them?
My knee jerk reaction is that I need something with a boom to keep the tom toms over the top of the bass drum. Like this: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Taye-Drums-6000-Series-Boom-Snare-Stand-with-Ball-Tilter-500604-i1424890.gc
