Tom mount help

Loading...

So I purchased a cool Tom mount tightener handle and proceeded to mount it.

Loosened the old cap head screw that was in place and quickly noticed that the bolt size was smaller than the one I had received. So back in the smaller screw went except it wouldn't tighten kept turning. Then to my shock I realized that the previous owner had installed a thread insert that was coming apart. So now I have no way to tighten the post. Now what do I do? Buy a new plate mount, find a way to add a new insert that matches the tightener thread I just bought?

Help.

Can you post a few pics and what brand mount? Sounds like a helicoil might have been used or just something wrapped around the screw maybe good nuff to hold....once. If the mount is easy to find and cheap it's the way to go. If harder to find you can use a timesert but it's a threaded sleeve and a bit more labor intensive to install. But is a far superior fix if there's room to do so.

This is what the mount looks like. There is barely a sign of thread in the hole and the tightener handle thread seems bigger. I wonder if I could tap new threads that matches the thread of the handle?

Or, does anybody have this piece that they would like to sell?

Thanks.

Hopefully there is enough meat on the mount that you could just drill it for the correct insert so you can use your new T-handle screw. If you epoxy the insert in place,it should be fine.I did this on a seat post, which takes alot of stress,at least in MY case Burger Kin

Yeah that's what I have planned. Going to remove the base plate from the kick drum and shuffle on down to an automotive store to see what my choices are.

Thanks

Quick repair update.

Interesting discovery. After peeling away the final remnants of the damaged heli coil insert, I discovered that the hole was still smaller than the t-handle stud!

I had purchased a tap and die kit that included handle, thread tap and a dozen inserts, for $30 dollars. But after learning that all I needed to do was to buy just a 8mm x 1.25 tapper, I got one for $4 bucks.

So I clamped the flange squirted a little 3in1 and proceeded to tap a nice clean new thread.

The hardest part was getting the t- handle to align through the hole in the clamping plate in the Tom mount. Not getting that hole just right could steer you to stripping the hole again.

I'm good to go now and relieved.
