Greetings,
I have a 20" Bass drum that has a rail mount and uses a standard, Ludwig L-arm mount that is 3/8" (9.5 mm) on either end. As you know, the Ludwig L-Rod isn't exactly generous as far as the vertical adjustment, and the horizontal adjustment is even shorter. This isn't a big deal on a mount that uses a vertical tube on the bass drum that you can adjust up and down, but on a rail mount where the only height adjustment is literally on the vertical part of the L-arm, it can be challenging. I wanted my rack tom (8" x 12") to be able to go just a little higher, so I brainstormed and came up with this:
LP (Latin Percussion) "Z-Rods", made for mounting cowbells, blocks etc. They are 3/8" (9.5 mm) on either end as well. Simply cut off the shorter end of the "Z" (the non-knurled end), so you're left with an "L". The long (knurled) part of the "L" is about 7", which gives you way more adjustability than the normal Ludwig L. Obviously, you don't want to mount your rack tom super high on the rail mount, as that would be a lot of stress on the L-arm, rail, and make your bass drum off balance, but for those of you, like me, that wanted just a little bit more height flexibility for the rack tom then the Ludwig L-arm can offer, this works pretty well. It also works well as a replacement for the bottom part of a shell mounted cymbal holder too (the part that fits into the bracket).
I hope this helps. Just wanted to pass it along.
