Can we just take a second to marvel at the drum sound on music from big pink. THIS is how a drum set should sound. Anyone got any tips on tuning/ getting something remotely close? It seems to be common knowledge that Levon's kit was made up of old marching drums etc. and he taped his wallet to the snare. Anything else?

Levon used a Gretsch kit as well as the pawnshop Ludwigs in pretty close sequence. Whether he had them both at the same time or not, hard to say.

During the early Band era he went for a bendy note off his toms. Tuning the reso head up and the batter head down to get that dip. He talks about it in his book as well as here:

Great album, great drummer that in my opinion doesn't get recognized enough.

18 Kits & 40+ snares..
Not a Guru, just addicted to drums

I seem to remember an interview with him talking about using "Memphis tuning"

where the drums were tuned to the low side and muffled down pretty well.

Has anyone heard the Aretha Franklin version from '69 with the late&great 'Skydog" Duane Allman playing slide guitar&the Muscle Shoals rhythm section playing on it?,

FWIW/INHO also a great drum sound! :),

It's on Duane Allman "An Anthology" volume 1.
