Slight correction:Not a K.It's a 20" Avedis transitional stamp. The famous one with the cut-outs that Buddy Rich proclaimed to be: "the best cymbal I've ever heard".

OK....just assumed it was a K,as thats what he played most of the time........

Did that cymbal fetch that on you know where?

"When you first hit the cymbal, it sounds really weird-dark, trashy, a little on the dead side, and it takes a minute to get used to it. But, when you play it for a while it (at least for me) becomes hypnotic, and it just has some magical high stick sound, and low growl sound with no middle range. It just seems to blend really well with acoustic instruments."

I don't have a video, but I do have the next best thing. That would be a this photo of Mel playing with "the Dream Band", viewed along with a soundfile of the same playing this very cymbal. Using your imaginations you can "see" the band memebers playing and moving right along with the music as you listen:SOUNDFILE BELOW....SO CLICK ON IT:Mel and the Dream Band playing his cut-out Avedis

Awesome Thanks !

When I downloaded the link, it was a clip from the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra playing "The Second Race", and not the Terry Gibbs Dream Band. Or maybe you were referring to the TL/ML Orchestra as a "Dream Band", which is certainly understandable.

Thanks,

Bill

I can't say that you're not right. Matthias gave me this clip, and I just went with it.

So anyway:

Dream Band, Schmeme band....

Your hearin' Mel's old A with the bites out of it.

That's all I know.
