From OsakaBop

The kit is coming along great - I wanted to add that your ride in the photo likes very interesting- what is it?

Thanks!

It is a late 50's Zildjian 22", but without having it weighed yet, it feels light-med or med weight. Quriously, it has 2 rivet holes, placed approximately 4" apart from one another. I've never seen this and wonder why they are placed like that. The cymbal doesn't feel soft there or appear to have a crack.

BTW, the cymbal sounds amazing!

How many hours do you have in your labour of love?

I really enjoy, as do all other here, a job well done! Bravo drum friend!

Are you on the look-out for other kits to restore or are you going to settle into this one for the long haul?

Cheers!

At least 60 hrs, but I haven't been counting...my wife has, and thanks for the kudos, kellyj!

Though I did enjoy the challenge of learnining the "how to," and much of the detail work, I just really wanted a 3 ply, vintage kit to get that great sound i had heard. I got this star that needed so much attention because all the affordable CL deals were snached up before i could get to them (I live in so cal near LA), and because clean kits (even inexpensive seeming MIJ's) were out of my price range. I would take on a snare renovation if i find an affordable matching one, but hard cases are what I'm after most urgently.

I will happily play this great looking and sounding kit until I get the urge for something different. The good thing is that I'm not afraid of a picking up a tired or beat looking instrument now and making it shine.

Peace & rhythm,

Brianflowers

yeah man my wife bought me a kit exactly like this except it had the snare and two mounted toms along with the 14" floor. she paid a whole $50.00 for it and it sounds incredible! there's something special about this particular batch of kits. i've owned Majestic kits before (mid '60s red sparkle, not the semi pro silver badge but the gold and black) but they were just so so in sound. i noticed that the grey painted (interior) shells on these are quite a bit thicker than the other stencil kits put out at the time (mid '60s-'70s) and this seems to be what's responsible for the monster sound. i heard them on a recording we made the other day and by God they sound way better than my Ludwig Super Classic Chrome over Maple shell '70s vintage kit. the matching wood snare is also better than my Lugwig 10 lug Supraphonic. the wrap is not too pretty on the bass drum though. the snare is not discolored and shows a beautiful blue bowling ball kind of swirl. i wish the whole kit had survived in as good a shape as the snare but anyway the sound is the thing. maybe it's just the 40 something years that have dried out these shells so that they ring out so loud. guys i'm here to tell you these old stencil kits have some value to a drummer who is still searching for that certain sound. good heads helps alot too whether regular Remo Ambassador or fancy schmancy Evans EC or Remo Powerstroke. spend just a little money on heads and a little time tuning and these kinds of kits can make the other drummers in town take notice.
