Yep plenty of 'symbols' for sale this side of the pond too I'm afraid!

Plenty of them on this side of Channel, too.

And since we're talikng about drumming terminology, I'll throw a question:

How many different words for single parts of drumkit do English-speaking drummers use?

Because in Czech, for example, there are at least 6 names I know for snare drum alone (you probably wouldn't find them in dictionary, but anyway...):

-malý buben (small drum)

-virbl (drum roll)

-rytmičák (rythm guy)

-esák ("S" guy)

-céčko ("C")

-střeďák (middle guy)

And around four names for bass drum and for toms...

Sysl krysu nenahradi!

-196?-72 6ply White Oyster Amati
-1960s 3ply Red Sparkle Amati
- Zildjian, Paiste, Zyn, Istanbul

It looks like folks had a problem with mahogany substitution a long time ago too. Could have been Lauan! Here is a brief article from Presto, 1925. Presto was an old music trade magazine.

PRESTO, August 15, 1925 - source - arcade-museum.comADVERTISING FAKE MAHOGANY.Among the July complaints coming within theFederal Trade Commission at Washington were fouragainst lumber companies. The charge in each casewas "advertising as Philippine mahogany wood thatis not mahogany." The lumber concerns againstwhich the misleading charge was brought are: PacificSouthwest Import Co., Los Angeles; KirschmannHardwood Co., San Francisco; Hammond LumberCo., Los Angeles; Robert Dollar Co., San Francisco,Cal.

My reason for posting the article above from 1925 about mahogany was to suggest we all may have some of those nice old “mahogany” drums from that era, but some may not be mahogany. If we consider what instruments were being built out of mahogany, in the music trade back then, drums, pianos/organs, guitars and banjos were probably the most in demand. So the collectors of those vintage drums might want to re-examine the wood. Who knows, maybe there are a few, "rare" for that time, Lauan (or other substitutes) shells out there. Maybe it’s in the plies? YMMV!

Let me know if you feel I should have posted this in it's own thread.
