The Chicago Drum Show

Some points of interest....

The Cool Ludwig Stick center that Billy Jeansone had at the Classic Drummer booth was purchased as a gift for Bun E Carlos. That was a very cool memorabilia item that did not last long.

Mike C. brought his Slingerland black beauty on display in the Steve Maxwell Booth and Joe Luoma had that really cool Ludwig Black Beauty.

I also sat down with Ingo from the Trixon Book and we talked for about an hour. It turns out the son of a former owner has a huge collection of images and he was allowed to scan all of them. The book has at least 1200 pictures and is in German and English. I did not get a chance to get a copy at the show, but will get one soon.

Other then that there were plenty of people taking pictures and my amateur photography stopped me from taking more pictures. Two of the professionals will be sending me some images. I hope.

I will be upgrading to a new camera this year at some point and that will help my photo "skills"

I loved the show. My only mistake was not planning to stay all day Saturday and into Sunday after arriving for early deals on Friday. I missed some great clinics. I'll get it right next year. I had a chance to follow Stanton Moore around and learn a bit about some of his cool mixed sticking patterns. I nabbed a refurbished Oaklawn Camco four piece and also agreed to the purchase of an all original LA Camco 3 piece that I have the matching snare for. I decided to buy one snare drum and after playing everything on the floor I arrived at a new solid cherry wood Craviotto with nickel hardware and vintage edges. It was about 70% under list so I am way pleased. I was torn between that and a Dunnett that was about 25% under retail but in the end I went with the wood which is my natural bias.

I let an Alice Cooper Blue LA Camco snare drum go and had a rush of of non-buyers remorse. Too late, someone else nabbed it.

I loved the Spizzichino cymbals but when I heard the prices, I had to pass. They are sensationally musical though, but I'm just not destined to own a $6 or $700 ride cymbal. The Sabian collection of prototype one of a kind hand hammered cymbals were very intriguing. A great alternative to Zildjian's K series.

I fell in love with the lady running the ***elry booth but had to pass on that as well, again too expensive.

I really enjoyed playing the Trick drums. Exceptionally warm with great ring, which I love. The Joyful Noise snare drums sound terrific as well but not any better than the Craviotto I picked up. Great story on the wood though. Apparently the densest wood available on earth due the logs being immersed at the bottom of a river for 150 years.

I could go on but basically it was gear-head drummer heaven.

Regards,

Gary

Good question, I do not remember for sure.

David

Here is an image of the bongos I picked up Sunday (Story on first post). These were in the bag and I did not take a close look until I got home. I also have the missing finish for the center support.

Besides that they are near mint.

I wonder who would like these?

Mr. Ludwig did not attend. Unfortunately, he is not in the best of health.

Saturday was a packed show, Sunday was a bit slower and much more volume. It was nice to see everyone... thanks for taking the time to chat David. I picked his brain about selling on eBay. Good suggestions he gave me.

Looking forward to next year!

Great stuff. This is the kind of drum show I love to attend....just unfortunately too far for me. Compared to NAMM and Musikmesse, I would rather do the Chicago show any day. Normal people like me....not all the high falutin' in-crowd. Thanks for the pics and the great story about the drummer that passed away. Amazing how it changes things when you knew the hands that played the instruments.

Cheers,

Chris.

This was my second trip to The Chicago Show. This year I brought my 8 year old son along. We had a blast checking out all the very cool vintage and custom drums. The only cash I spent was for a few odd and end parts.

Since then my son has the 'drum bug' in a big way. I just bought a Kent kit that he and I are going to restore for him to have for his first kit.

Next year Im going to try to make it for the Saturday clinics !
