slingerland edges varied quite a bit over the years. i have three slingy 3 ply kits and all three have very different edges and very different sounds. you really can't generalize with slingerland.

This is a collection of video's I've made over the last year of what I call the big four American drum companies. Judge for yourself....Rogers Cleveland era in a blue glass glitter finish....8x12,16x16,14x20Slingerland Niles in a blue agate finish....8x12,16x16,14x20Gretsch stop sign badge in a gold satin flame finish....8x12,16x16,14x20Ludwig keystone badge in a gold sparkle finish....8x12,16x16,14x20http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhXukLMKKrUhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjV8r2Lpukchttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffJxq2ABdsEhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyHiTLSTFyc

Wow, Super Cool Drumsets, I liked the Slingerlands the best but the Rogers Bass drum was a standout as was the Ludwig 12" Rack tom... Why is that? Ludwig 12"s always sound the best, no matter how you tune them and sound great with 1 or 2 ply Heads, and I think Gretsch 13"s are next in line....

Wow, Super Cool Drumsets!!!, In my Opinion the Rogers Bass Drum won hangs down, The Gretsch Floor Tom and The Ludwig 12" Rack Tom Were the Clear Winner, Although the Slingerlands disnt sound better in any single catagory or any single drum thay are still my favorites... Kinda like a football team that doesnt make it to the Superbowl, They will still have the Loyaal diehard fans... Hey Thanks For the Awesome demo!!!! Any Chance you could put together a Low Tuning and a High Tuning demo for each one of the big 4?

Well, that goes to show you how ahead of the game Rogers was. I'm not sure what you guys hear in the Slingerlands that make you like them, but believe me, the Rogers out performed all of them in live situations. The Slingerlands especially were very dry and thuddy, not much tone over electric guitars. You should watch the video made at Steve Maxwell's drum shop about the construction and sound of each brand, he talks very highly of Gretsch and Rogers.

Interesting. While you are obviously not a Slingy fan, compared to the others, they are the only ones that sounded different to me. The other three sounded the same, with maybe the Ludwig's having a bit more whatever you call it. I wonder if the Steve Maxwell lesson didn't subconsciously tilt you away from the Slingy's? A well known guy like that telling you which drums are built the best would tend to sway a lot of people I would think. The Slingys the shortest video too, by far, compared to the other three.

Good stuff though. It reminded me of those old pepsi/coke commercials and would have been real cool to see you playing them behind a sheet or something and having to pick based on the sound alone, and not the sound plus the name of the manufacturer staring at us from the kick. You get my drift.

All in all, pretty cool.

Well, no, that particular video only confirmed what I had suspected all along. Every Slingerland kit I've owned had pretty much he same sound. Not a bad sound, but the drums did not peoject near as much as Ludwig, Gretsch or Rogers. From my personal experience, the Rogers and Ludwig kits I've owned cut through more and the Rogers were the easiest to tune, high or low.

Listen to this video with a Rogers black diamond pearl kit I use to own. The kit on the video is a 9x13,14x14,14x20, I have a video of the same song using a Slingerland kit with an 8x12,16x16,14x20 that doesn't sound near as big.

And with the Slingy's....

For me personally, the Slingy's capture the vintage sound best. They just seem to have the most unique character. Also, in the video above, I feel that the Slingy kit sounds more "radio" while the Rogers kit sounds more "live". The Rogers kit sounds great, but I have to agree that it is the most modern sounding of the bunch.

That is just my opinion....everyone has their own set of ears

....lovin' that vintage sound

Well, the reason the Rogers sound more "modern" is because of the shell construction and the sharper bearing edges. Rogers used more maple in there shells than the other companies and there bearing edges were cut sharper, like modern kits. They were simply ahead of there time. That being said, I'm still prefer Ludwig, 3ply or 6ply, with Rogers a close second.

Not the best examples. Neither sounded good in that setting. Both were lost.
