The best method for cleaning Sonor Drums

Loading...

Hello fourmers,

I have a vintage 60's teardrop sonor 3 piece kit that my brother gave me. He's a killer lead guitar player, song writer, and a God of sound engineering. I also have a 68 Hollywood Ludwig kit. I bought it from a dearly departed friend of mine's son. My friend Cliff "rest in peace" used to brag about his Ringo Starr Ludwigs. He used to say the actually belonged to Ringo. lol Well I drug em out a few weeks ago and decided to set them up in my living room. The Sonors were in the same closet so i decided " what the Hel. Might as well do them too, my livin room looks like hel.

I have had a saved search on ebay for a floor tom for the sonors for 3-4 yrs.

Well after I got em out I started searching and found the floor tom on craigslist in canada for $250. I finally persuaded the guy to put it on ebay so i could buy it. It will be here thursday. In the mean time Im searching for a snare for the luddys. I went pawn shopping and bought 4 metal snares.

thats will b e another mission laater. Cut to the chase: I bought a braand new 14x5 Ludwig Wood snare on ebay. I have matching Luddy wrap for it and wrap for my so called rogers floor tom comming form jammin sam. I'm about to embark on a restoration journey. I really need to polish the chrome on everything and polish the drums. Please tell me the precedure you use to polish chrome and drums. What kind of polish? Do you completly disassemble the drum? Any advice will be appreciated!

Hey Poppy, When I did my Ludwig Standard snare (my 1st project), I found this article very helpful - it pretty much covers everything.

Hey thanks! Looks like a good plan. I'll start rounding up supplies. I already put the parts from my floor tom in plastic baggies. I bought 3 different sizes at michaels the other day. They are much smaller than sandwich bags. and I have regular sandwich bags. I didnt mark the bags though. Taking pics is an excellent idea to reference back to when reassembling. I have already stripped the floor tom im going to rewrap. This drum isnt a ludwig, so I ordered new lugs and tension rods and a new bottom whoop for it. I have a brand new snare comming i am going to rewrap, so I wont have to do any cleaning on it. The rest of the drums need the full detail job though.

Yep, that's a great post. - It sounds like you've got a lot on your plate. Best not to do too much at once - one drum at a time helps to keep your parts straight. Photos are cool to show progress, etc., but won't help much if you mix up or misplace small parts. So don't rush.

Little victories are better than giant defeats.

I'm just a novice, but there are some true experts here; this is a great forum full of a lot of searchable info. It pays to research - Good Luck.

Well I did get my floor tom finished. I recieved my sonor floor tom today. It looks like it will be a good match. I havent got it home yet. I will concentrate on one drum at a time. that sounds like a good plan. Im pretty mechanical inclined too. I used to build hot rod engines when I was young. Spent every dime I could make on cars and motorcycles. Im glad im not married. No wife to nag about all my stuff scattered everywhere. I have a live in girl friend though. I'm wondering when she's gonna suggest that I straighten things up a bit. She actually suggested that i set one of my kits up in the living room.

Thats when all this started lol. Those drums have been all stacked up in a closet for yrs. I bought a restored black diamond pearl vintage snare off ebat today for 155. I just got her a diamond ring for v day last week :)
