Great advise thus far.Will add this tho:Each drum has its own sweet spot - sometimes if I'm required to play cross stick in a set I will mark it on the skin.

I haven't been able to practice any of the above tips as I have been so busy lately with my real job. Darn it! But, can't wait to try all of these.

The other advantage to marking the spot is if you wear hearing protection (which you should...) you can't always hear it when your playing. So that way you can just go for it and know it sounds good!

all this info is right on the money I like to play only Hickory and i like to make contact with the stick just as it tapers to it's fullest diameter roughly about 1/3 stick or close to it and i too find just next to a lug produces the loudest crack i set my snare to fall into this position.
