Tempro Snare

Loading...

Hi drum dudes.

I bought this Tempro from Music-Go-Round the other day. Actually, it was in a case with a snare stand. I wanted the stand for my practice pad and didn't want to pay much. Anyway, for $20 I went ahead and bought the snare. I cleaned the stand first and started using it and finally got around to cleaning the snare. I really like the color of the wrap and it doesn't sound too bad. It could probably use some new heads. Anyone know around what year this is? here are some pics.

Hi FT. This is a pearl snare, from around 67-70. Here is a hint for you: take some 60 grit sandpaper and deepen those snare beds a tad bit and it will make a huge difference in the sensitivity. I am talking maybe half again as much as they already are. That will have a major impact. Then when you have finished, take some 220 and lightly sand all the way around your edges, top and bottom. It will close the grain and give you a smoother surface, allowwing for sweeter tuning. It actually will allow the collar to move with less friction across the edge. If you really want to go all out and make it sing, sand the entire interior down to close the grain and then lacqwuer the interior with one coat. It will make that drum sound awesome. I have several of that type shelll. Some are lacqyered, some are not, and each has iot's own voice. That is one sweet wrap.

Thanks Jonnistix. I actually cut those beds in when I was cleaning it and thought that was deep. So go some more on the beds to improve the sound. I also did the bearing edges and smoothed those out too and the interior with some 400 grit. Then I just oiled up the interior with mineral oil. Like I said it sounds pretty good already, but the original heads have some cuts and they sound a little on the dead side. I will replace the heads when I get a chance. I really enjoyed cleaning her up and making it payable. very satisfying to see the end result.

Very cool. I have one lust like it with original Apollo heads, 40 years old, and had a Pearl endorser telling me it was a "POS", why do I mess with these things, what a waste, yada, yada, the same crap everyone else says. Then he played it, and immediately offered to buy it, saying he had $500 drums that don't sound that good. And then apologized, saying he had no idea any of these old stencil drums could have a good sound, let alone with old, worn out heads, and less than desireable shell composition. I love it when a naysayer plays my drums. They learn a lesson in humility, I do the kind of work people don't understand. I try to make them live agian, and not as they did, as they should have been.

My mother bought me my first set in 1975??? It was a black Apollo set complete with throne, one cymbal, a pair of hats and hardware. The hats would pancake if i pressed too hard. She paid $400 for that set. Wish I knew something about drums back then. I would have bought a used set for less.

I added the veneer inside to all of the shells. Curly Maple with a stain added lacquer, very sweet sounds from these old cans.

Very nice! I like what you did with the interiors. Jonnistix, you got a very bad case of the vintage bug. ;)

My little boy has a nice set of "blue flash" (sparkle) Majestics, complete with 2-12's and a snare as well. Just old junk....
