Temperature/Weather Storage of drums?

Loading...

This is a great thread. I just wish I had read it before my old Slingerlands started to lose their wrap. Oh well, I took it all off, put a finish in the wood drum, and have never looked back.

Now I have a question/comment. It's about leaving cymbals out in the cold. A friend of mine who races cars said they would always leave the engine blocks out in an unheated shed all winter before they used them to build a new engines. They felt it made the engines stronger. That said, I'm wondering if leaving cymbals out in the cold might have some beneficial effect on them similar to cryogenic tempering. I know mine have spent many a cold night in the van and after thirty years I think they sound pretty sweet.

Now that you mention it, the bass drum inlay and the wrap on the WFL all came unglued. The inlay is an easy fix, the floor tom a bit of a project..... I never thought it could be due to weather...I'm amazed at the amount of knowledge that I gain from this site....you guys are great, thanks.

I've never left drums in an unheated shed/garage here in New England, so I can't comment on that. What I can tell you is, never, EVER leave your drums in a hatchback, under the window, in an area with no shade, in August :(

I was young and stupid... and I've learned from my mistake.

My Rogers Blue sparkle set would cost over 2500 to replace just the drums.

The Red Ripple....... 3000.00 if........ and its a big IF........ if I could find another set. I have way too much invested to take any chances during transportation or storage. I have a lot of dollars invested cases.

....good point. I remember throwing my drums in the back of my wagon back in the 70's and there was an old man there staring at me. I asked if I could help him. He said, "Man, those are your tools. They should last you a lifetime if you treat them better than that". I never thought of my kits like they were my tools. I always remembered that lesson. I never considered weather to be an issue, but I've changed my mind. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks.
